Default Marconi Collectors

Are there any Marconi test equipment collectors in the forum? I've recently come across a load of Marconi gear from a clear out which filled the back of my estate car, with the back seats down too.

From valve volt meters to signal generators. I couldn't really turn it down. Most are working, with about two needing some fettling. I'm really amazed at the build of these signal generators, the way everything is put together. They really are a work of art.

I've got one open now to take a look at and am just amazed at it. Plus the smell reminds me of some of the old kit I used to work on, which was old at the time!

Good gear, I've used plenty of it over the years as a mobile tech. I too have a couple of 2955's, retained after they were decommissioned by my employer. They were the industry standard through the eighties and early nineties. They seemed to be pretty tough, as mine lived in the back of my works vehicle all year round. Obviously they have a couple of problems nowadays, due to their age, but generally speaking worth picking up and holding on to. I seem to remember that MI became IFR in later years. That was probably early nineties?

Am no collector but have a few bits including a big RF sig gen. Whilst well built it doesn't have the jaw dropping sort of build quality that an old Tek scope or HP bit of test gear does, however the big coil assembly is pretty impressive.

I don't suppose there is a 2310 in there?
Had to ask!

Haven't got any Marconi test gear at the moment, but I used to have a Marconi TF2414A counter (re-branded Venner), it got sold a few years back, hopefully it's still around somewhere as old counters tend to get stripped for the displays.
I do still have a similar Venner one here.

Forum members who are also on the Yahoo Marconi Instruments group will know that there is a very small (ie 3!) group of ex-MI employees who are trying to preserve an archive of MI instrumentation and documentation, most of which has been rescued during the many "rationalisations" that have occurred over the years. It currently comprises 300-ish instruments from 1930 up till 2000 and a matching quantity of handbooks, manufacturing drawings, sales documentation etc. It currently has a home in a storage unit provided by the grace of the current owners - Viavi Inc.
Apart from maintaining the memory and history of Marconi Instruments (another once-great British manufacturer) we try and help out with requests for handbooks etc. If you have posted a request here or on the Yahoo group then if we can help you will have received a message from us. Conversely we are happy to accept donations as long as they are FOC! Being a voluntary activity we have no funds to buy stuff.

Thank you for that information, I shall take a look as there will be lots of info I'll be needing. The valve voltmeters certainly are in need of some work and two of the signal generators are, but four of the other generators are happily working.

I have the good fortune to have as my neighbour at home a guy who worked for Marconi and wrote the software for the 2955.

Signal generator wise, in my collection of 995's I have the
  • TF995
  • TF995A/2M
  • TF995A/3/S

Does anyone know of every variant of the 995? I know there are a few more but an internet search isn't bringing up an exhaustive list.

I hope to acquire a few more this year if I can spot any.

We still have a load of Marconi test gear in daily use where I work! RF power meters (digital ones), some large early digital signal generators, some sort of network analyser.. sadly a massive load got skipped last year, and we were not allowed any of it

Documentation exists to suggest the existence of at least these:
995A
995A/1
995A/2
995A/2M
995A/4
995A/5
995B
995B/2
995B/5

If you want to know the differences, that's a much more dificult question!

That is just ridiculous when companies do that, just what's the point.

They have done it twice now, and I wasn’t the only person showing my disgust!
