Default Vintage hi-fi at the 2019 Hi-Fi News Show in Ascot

Giving the modern stuff a run for its money at this year's UK Hi-Fi Show Live, the show that Hi-Fi News magazine runs, a nice set of old Japanese gear:

Sony TC-164SD, Nakamichi 550 and JVC KD-2 cassette decks
Sony PS-FL7 Quartz DD / linear tracking turntable
Hitachi FT-8000 FM tuner
Hitachi HA-7700 MOSFET integrated amplifier
Technics SB-7000 phase linear loudspeakers

It looked good, sounded great and gave no trouble all weekend, despite being given a good pounding!

My kind of system! You can keep the piano black finished gold plated trimmed modern wonders for those who want to brag about how much their phono cables cost.

Regards,
Paul

There's probably another description of it somewhere else on the internet detailing how many people were injured in the collapse of the soundstaging, how the granularity curdled the milk in people's lattes, and the slow bass, oh dear the slowness of the bass. Hope you didn't stay long in that room due to the lack of air.

AND your list of the equipment didn't include the cables. One of the great advances in home audio is the recognition of the cables being more important than the stuff in the boxes.

Equipment dating back to when brochures and reviews contained numbers! How unsophisticated!

The only part of that system that will have improved significantly since 1975 is loudspeakers. There has been a real revolution in understanding of what makes a speaker a truly great performer. Flat on-axis response is only part of the equation.

Or not, having heard both these and a variety of more modern designs. The SB-7000s are phase linear over a substantial part of the audio band, both through the staggered positioning of the drive units and the design of the crossover. Many modern loudspeakers have strayed away from this ideal and in my experience do not give such a solid stereo image as a phase linear design (e.g. Technics, B&O Uniphase, Philips MFB etc) does.

The SB-7000s also have a 13.5" bass unit which moves a lot of air with great ease. You have to spend silly money to get big units like these these days; it really does add to the realism when reproducing instruments that also move a lot of air. Lovely tweeter too...
