stylus for Electric gramophones
Hi all i was trawling through the local flea market today and came accross a stylus made to fint into the pickup of an old electric gramophone.unfortunatly it was for micro groove records.Does anyone know if these were made for 78rpm records?these are i think saphire tipped and screw into place where your normal Gramophone needle would.Any leads on a pair of these would be great as they would save me changin needles on my dj decks.Or has anyone made anything like this ?all hints and tips much appreciated...........Paul

Re: stylus for Electric gramophones
Thats interesting . Though I cant imagine it doing the microgroove records any good !especially fitted to earlier pickup types , plus you would need to regulate speed . Though 78RPM version seams logical . what does this thing look like ?

Re: stylus for Electric gramophones
Hi, I think Musonic have these listed at £8 each:-
http://www.musonic.co.uk/ Search on the site for "Straight Sapphire". However these can only be used at relatively light tracking weights, say 10-20 grammes or so. If you are using those typical pre-war "Blunderbuss" magnetic pickups with tracking weights measured in ounces rather than grammes , you may be better sticking to single-play steel needles, anything harder tends to sacrifice the record when they wear out rather than the needle. Fibre needles cause less damage but clog the grooves and need constant sharpening. There is an older thread on other needle types here: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...hlight=needles Another site about the varieties of needles past and present:- http://vwgc.org.au/needles/NeedlesOverview.htm Speaking as a record collector, I much prefer the scientific approach to reproduction, particularly with rare and valuable records, as well explained here:- http://www.vjm.biz/new_page_10.htm Have fun! . Regards, Mick. |
