Jockey wheel coupling query
I’ve trawled through the forum on a mobile device but can’t find a specific answer to this Q.
Garrard AT6 deck jockey wheel: I’m still working on this and am curious - once the wheel is ‘restored’ ( OT for this thread) , I note that the wheel only grips the drive spindle by push-fit pressure and a circlip. So unless I’m missing something, why doesn’t it just slip, wasting energy on the coupling between the drive spindle and jockey wheel, once the inside perimeter of the platter is engaged? Or is it designed to slip and the slippage acts as a ⚙️ gear? The circlip is only a retaining measured and doesn’t clamp the jockey wheel. If it isn’t supposed to skip, what’s a good fix? If there’s an appropriate thread I’ve missed, no worries.

Re: Jockey wheel coupling query
If everything's in shape then normally it won't slip, that's due to the pressure applied by the spring.

Re: Jockey wheel coupling query
From memory, ok not that good, the direction of the rotation pulls the jockey wheel against the the spindle and rim.

Re: Jockey wheel coupling query
Hi Frank, so you (and Lawrence ) mean it’s supposed to slip until that sideways pressure is applied?

Re: Jockey wheel coupling query
The idler wheel, the arm it's on, its engagement mechanism, the spring or springs etc etc and the idler wheels presentation to the stepped motor pulley (stepped pulley must be secure to the motor shaft) and the platter must all be ok for proper operation.
Grease/oil....should be where it's supposed to be and nowhere else. Lawrence. |

Indeed: I cleaned it in an ultrasonic bath and the perimeter with a solvent. I cleaned the spindle with a solvent. The appropriate parts only of the deck and mechanisms have been degreased from old funk meticulously and regreased selectively with lithium grease. I’m still not clear: would it be appropriate to fix the wheel permanently to the spindle or is it supposed to slip until the appropriate mech is engaged?

Re: Jockey wheel coupling query
I don't think you seem to have much faith in how the (tried and tested) pressure exerted by the inner rim of the turntable onto the Jockey (Idler) wheel and the Stepped Spindle works?

Re: Jockey wheel coupling query
Hadn’t seen Lawrence’s post, apologies Lawrence.
If you fix the jockey wheel to the spindle how would you change speeds on the stepped pulley. Have you seen this thread, scroll down to the relevant section. https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=75401

Re: Jockey wheel coupling query
Haha! That’s (was) right ...I get how the jockey wheel and inner rim of the turntable are coupled, but the slipping jockey wheel , well , that’s not exactly intuitive. And the process can’t be watched. I’m beginning to get it now, but there’s a learning curve with these mechs and their subtleties.

Re: Jockey wheel coupling query
The only cure is either a new or restored idler wheel. Nothing else provides a permanent cure.
