Help please
Just purchased a Ferrograph series 5 reel to reel from auction house, plugged in and it worked perfectly, decided to give a clean with switch cleaner and a quick brush, switched on again and the "Motor Starting Switch" (SW£) would not lock in position

The locking solenoid is run from the amplifier HT rail, if memory serves - start by checking if this is present.

The solenoid coil is in series with the HT-ve feed from the HT secondary winding center tap and ground, the coil has the Auto Stop Switch and the Manual Stop Switch connected across it.

You need to wait until the HT is up to full power before it will lock. If the smoothing C's are leaky the voltage might be dragged down too much. Is it hummy? If so the C's could be suspect. Also make sure the stop button end of tape foil switch is not shorted, unlikely but possible.
good luck

Also on this model the tape speed selector and the equalizing switch should be set to the same speed, if not the hold in solenoid won't work.
