Screw heads, diameter of?
Seemed liketh best place to ask, if not- mods please move.
Seems like centuries ago , I remember a wood work lecture where we were taught how to find the gauge of a wood screw. It was something like " measure the head in (was it 1/16, or 1/8) then double it and deduct 2 to arrive at a screw guage of e.g. 6. Or are these days screw heads measured in mm? |

Re: Screw heads, diameter of?
That was probably applicable to Nettlefolds screws. So many different standards these days. I have several boxes of Nettlefolds brass screws and I like to run a steel screw in the hole first to avoid straining the brass when screwing into hardwood. I have to use Nettlefolds steel screws for this as the pitches of the current offerings are different. Indeed, the pitch of screws of the same gauge from different brands can be dfferent.
I have a copy of the first edition of the STC Reference Guide for Radio Engineers that has a table of dimensions of Nettlefolds screws, but it's late, and it's in the shed at the bottom of the garden. The later editions, published by ITT, omit this essentially British data and concentrate on US data. The Machinery's screw thread book only gives data for machine screws. |

Re: Screw heads, diameter of?
To find the gauge of a traditional imperial wood screw:
"Measure across the head of the screw in sixteenths of an inch, double this number and then subtract two. This is the gauge of the screw." Google searches will find a number of charts giving further data on many types of screw including details of recommended clearance and thread holes sizes. Alan |

Many thanks. Last time I remember hearing this was in 2nd year high school, some almost 60 years ago. |
