A roof or loft mounted FM aerial will be fine for DAB in strong signal areas, because you don't need to worry about analogue effects like multipath, and the low gain doesn't matter. Even a TV aerial will usually be OK, simply because it's high up. DXing obviously needs a properly designed aerial of course.

Quite. The same applies to broadcast TV reception. It is amazing that assorted scrap on a chimney can do the job that it does! However there is no substitute for doing the job properly and having a decent margin over the "knee". There is also the screening issue, a communal system we look after gets blocking during the dark hours. That's down to poor screening / no balun on the aerial system not being able to keep the noise out. Otherwise it works adequately.
