Bargain Hunt music special
Watching bargain hunt today as i type .
Todays episode is a music special with radios and record players galore on display and being bought by the contestants. Also a look inside BBC maida vale studios in London. Well worth watching on iplayer if you missed it today.

Re: Bargain Hunt music special today
The Orion radio did surprisingly well despite apparently having knackered piano key switchgear, which often seems to give problems in these East European sets. The hammer prices of valve radios at general auctions are completely unpredictable.

Re: Bargain Hunt music special today
I thought the Collaro record player was quite good value especially as the cabinet was stuffed full of 78s all in with the price.

Re: Bargain Hunt music special today
The other record player had me cringing every time they described it as a BSR.
I suppose you have to recognise that orphaned letter "F" in a funny typefont as being "Fidelity" (Usually meaning low fidelity! not my favourite stuff to fix when I was a kid) David

Re: Bargain Hunt music special today
I remember seeing an Orion radio on B.H a while back, and that it did command a reasonable price.
My brother says that he has repaired two of these Orion radios a few years ago. The switch banks needed repairs and cleaning. Both customers were really pleased with the results. The Orion radios look like a really good sounding product. Cheers Mike |

Re: Bargain Hunt music special today
They are a pretty typical east European 60s valve radio though, a sort of poor man's Grundig. I think they were sold through mail order. It's odd that they seem to be finding a market, as they don't look anything special to my eyes, and there's no real build quality there.

Re: Bargain Hunt music special
Those Orions are HUGE! The woodwork always seems to be immaculate and super-shiny... the reason being that it's actually a very durable Formica-type laminate bonded onto the plywood carcase.

Re: Bargain Hunt music special
I didn't work at Maida Vale during my 7 plus years tech opping at BBC Radio though I was once sent there for a one day familiarisation experience so it was good to see it on Bargain Hunt yesterday and in particular Chris Lycett conducting the tour which brought back memories of many shifts with him in Radio One when he was a young producer and always a delight to work with......I must confess I didn't recognise him on the box yesterday but then it's at least 43 years since I last saw him!
