Re: Which Scientist on the new £50 Note?
Fair enough. Either way, they're out of the running for the present "consultation".

Re: Which Scientist on the new £50 Note?
I would like to apologise for not knowing who Ada Lovelace was.
In future I will post less and Google more when in in doubt.

Sir Alec Jeffreys, definitely. His discoveries heralded a quantum leap in forensic science using DNA profiling. It has changed the world of policing and criminology. What previously would have been a bland crime scene or a person of unknown parentage is now rather more easily and extremely accurately identified. A game changer.

Re: Which Scientist on the new £50 Note?
Neither quite as illustrious, but important in their own fields and as it's 100 years since WWI:
Dame Helen Charlotte Isabella Gwynne-Vaughan, GBE (née Fraser; 21 January 1879 – 26 August 1967) was a prominent English botanist and mycologist. During the First World War, she served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and then as Commandant of the Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF) from 1918 to 1919. For her service she was the first woman to be awarded a military DBE in January 1918. She was the first Chief Controller of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). She was also active in Girl Guides and was honoured with the Silver Fish. She was awarded the Trail Medal by the Linnean Society in 1920. Another war-related one. Elsie Widdowson CH CBE FRS (21 October 1906 – 14 June 2000), was a British dietitian and nutritionist. She and Dr Robert McCance were responsible for overseeing the government-mandated addition of vitamins to food and wartime rationing in Britain during World War II. She was one of the first women graduates of Imperial College. She did postgraduate work at the Department of Plant Physiology at Imperial College, receiving a PhD in chemistry in 1931 and also received a doctorate from the Courtauld Institute. Widdowson and McCance headed the first mandated addition of vitamins and minerals to food. Their work began in the early 1940s, when calcium was added to bread. They were also responsible for formulating the wartime rationing of Britain during World War II. Widdowson and McCance were employed by the Medical Research Council from 1946, and spent most of their working life in Cambridge. They were consulted on the rehabilitation of the victims of severe starvation in Nazi concentration camps, and visited the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark in early 1946 to study of the impact of the poor wartime diet on the people in Nazi-occupied territories. Her work led to revised standards for breast milk substitutes in the UK in the 1980s. (All from wikipedia) |

Re: Which Scientist on the new £50 Note?
Katherine Johnson deserves some recognition. She calculated the Apollo 11 Trajectory, among other achievements, but from a job as essentially a human calculator, low in status and badly paid at the time. It is inspiring to think what she could have achieved in an equality-aware environment and in one when she could have had the same career prospects as a man.

Everbody, heads up!
Alice Bell and Emily Grossman are going to be talking about the frontrunners so far... This will be on Radio 4's Inside Science sometime between 4.30 and 5 today (Thursday 8 Nov).

Has Lord Kelvin been featured on a Scottish note?

Re: Which Scientist on the new £50 Note?
I did wonder about John harrison, who created the first reliable chronometer but was it applied science or engineering that allowed him to make an accurate clock?
certainly Lord kelvin deserves something in my book. A. |

Lord Kelvin current Clydedale Bank £100 note, but there does't seem to be a rule against appearing on both Scottish & Bank of England notes, as Adam Smith has been on both. Other inventors / Scientists on Scottish notes include Alexander Fleming and Alexander Graham Bell.

Re: Which Scientist on the new £50 Note?
Is it necessary for the nominated person to be dead?
If those who are still breathing are eligible I'd suggest either Mr. Dyson or Mr. Berners-Lee (though some would claim Dyson's an engineer not a scientist). Dr. R.V. Jones of WWII-fame would be another worthy contender in the dead-people list. |

Re: Which Scientist on the new £50 Note?
Yes, that is one of the two stated criteria - the other being that they're not fictional. As commented earlier, they probably also have to be British, though this is not specifically stated, either on the nomination form or in the Radio Four programme.

Re: Which Scientist on the new £50 Note?
I just hope the final decision is made according to a genuinely gender-level playing field. In the current atmosphere, it will have to be a woman or we can expect a torrent of "complaints".

Some would find '...or a female' rather patronizing.
