Grundig TK14 Tape Splicing - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Hi all. This is my first post. Does anyone know or have knowledge regarding Grundig TK14 Tape Splicing? The User Manual seems to show a small plastic 'gizmo' that fits into the two small holes in the top plate to the left of the tape head cover that appears to be used as a 'Tape Lock'. Does anyone know what the small plastic 'gizmo' is or even where to find one? I don't know if this splicing process using the 'tape lock' in the TK14 holes is limited to the TK14 or it may be something that Grundig suggested could be used on all their reel to reel models. Any information would be most welcome. Thank you all; sonoguy.

This is not for splicing the tape but for tape cleaning.

For splicing just lay the ends of the tape carefully on a length of sellotape and trim off the surplus.

No! Please don't use sellotape or any other tape not designed specifically for the job!

The adhesive used oozes out over time and will contaminate tape heads, rollers, guides, capstan and pinch wheel!

Plus, of course, any other tape played on the machine will similarly be contaminated.

A simple splicing block is made from aluminium with a a ¼" groove for the tape and guides for the cutting blade (usually a single edged razor blade) at both 90° and 45°.

The tricky part is holding the two tape ends so that they are precisely butted together while the splicing tale is applied.

Improved splicers are available which have clamps to hold the two ends in place to make this part easy
