Sorry if I am being thick, but how do you post the small picture some members have under their ID name.

It works as Cobaltblue says.
I would add that it is worth editing the photo on your own desktop so that you can see what it is going to look like before you add it to your profile in the edit avatar tab.
They are quite small image files and are resized automatically when you add them.
There are other web sites out there that do not resize and have strict requirements.
Even regular photos get resized by me before I post them because I can check what they will look like after I have posted them.

Yes with the maximum 80 by 80 pixels, a fairly simple and clear image works best.
