Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
Hi all,
While shopping at Ikea on Sunday I spotted their JANSJÖ clip on work lamps. As I've been hunting for a better lighting solution for my microscope I thought they would be worth a try (priced at £10 each). 100% impressed with them, nice even light distribution, the clamps are strong and the goosenecks hold their position well. Power supply wall plug is a bit chunky but not a big issue. Cheers, Kev |

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
I use these as well. Watch out as some are daylight (5000k) and some are 'warm' (2700k). I prefer the warm ones but they're equally bright and as useful for spotlighting close work. I also have a stereo microscope for small stuff and they're ideal for it.

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
I think I'm going to have to get some!
My scope illuminator uses a filament bulb and a big variable resistor. The bulb housing runs hot enough to burn you skin if you brush it. I have a fibre-optic illuminator and it uses a 200W sealed halogen unit. this thing turns the contacts in the bulb holder to powder! David

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
Should you not have an Ikea nearby, or like me, would prefer not to visit one (!), they are also available on ebay. There are also other alternatives on the same theme. Use clip on led work lamp as the search term.

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
I have lost count of the number of times I have been burnt by my Habitat halogen bench lamp. It is difficult to get the light to where you want it without getting too close to the lamp housing. Also, the lampholder connections fail due to the excess heat which is a nuisance. These LED bench lamps would appear to be a solution to these problems.

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
But maybe be wary of ac powered LEDs on rotating machinery- strobe effects. Halogen or GLS filament thermal inertia limits flicker.

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
I have several of these, but they are desk types with a base. Really great for a spot light on the work bench.

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
I use these as work lights - on the lathe, drill press, grinder and polisher. I think the LED supply must be a high frequency SMPS because I haven't seen any strobe effects.

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
Just bought me a pair of these lights and was 'amused' that the plug that connects the light to the psu is a DIN Speaker Plug (1 round pin & 1 flat one) !!

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
I guess it's a very cheap polarised connector with reasonable current handling. ISTR our outdoor Christmas lights psu uses a screw ring locked version.

Re: Ikea LED light / Microscope modification
Still on the subject, most of my Ikea LED's have developed switch problems, they are either Rocker type or Push-Push, and the light flickers until you switch it off and then on again. Changing the switch cures the problem
Mine also have two types of plugs, a regular DC coaxial power plug, and the 2 pin DIN type of plug
