Think of a capacitor as a bucket holding water. The value in uF is how much water it can hold, the voltage is the pressure it can withstand.
The 10uf 400V capacitor holds less water but can withstand higher pressure. The 47uF 100V capacitor holds more water but can only stand a pressure of 1/4 that of the 10uF and would burst. Of course its not really water, that's just a way of visualising it but if you connect the 47uF 100V capacitor to 400V it really would burst! Peter |

And make sure the polarity is correct too!

No! Capacitors are easy to find and not expensive, so why not use he correct value?

You can safely fit a capacitor with a higher voltage rating, but it is best not to go too far, keep to a similar capacity rating. In many cases the capacity rating may not need to be exact. For instance a 8uF capacitor can be replaced with a 10uF one, and a 50uF capacitor can be replaced with a 47uF capacitor. You will find most capacitors come in "preferred" values and it is usually best to select one of the next size up in value.

Have a look on Jellyfish Audio, they have a very good selection of electrolytic caps and some nice polyester types,

10uF @ 450VDC, are in current production and would be a perfect replacement for your 10uF @ 400VDC.
With Capacitors, you can always go above the specified voltage rating (within reason) but NEVER go below.
