Approximately in the beginning of 1967 they switched to large case with microphone compartment and put the logo normal way.

A true Philips one as they all were (I think you mean the external appearance changed at some point?)

This set was destined for the USA anyway, given the /54 destination or execution code. Since Philips didn't use the Philips name, the only logical thing was to brand it Norelco. I don't think that qualifies as relabeling.

Well, Norelco-labeled ones from 1967 are EL3302/94 G1 and then 1968+ G2 are EL3302/94G

You're right and you may be on to something, though I don't know what exactly. I'll observe some more destination codes in other equipment as well. Only thing I can say for sure now, is that /54 was seen on several other Norelco sets.

Not on EL3302s for the US - they all are either /94 or /94G only

Just cleaned up and installed new belts, cleaned heads and pinch wheel and runs like a dream. Not sure if anyone can confirm it's a variant of an EL3302 and wondering if someone can put a date to it

remark on AC128 etc. transistors: they dont work well because of tinwhisker growth. Thin whiskers of crystals grow during the years out of the housing. A few knocks with the handle of a screwdriver on the transistor will in many occasions solve the problem. The whiskers will break apart, and there is no need of replacement.

regards,
mike

Just unearthed my collection of old magazines during a loft clear-out, and I see from the attached advert in the March 1967 issue of "Movie Maker" that Philips were only offering the EL3301 (specifically the EL3301T) in the UK market at that date. That issue has a review of the then-current offerings of reel-to-reel and cassette recorders suitable for sound recording for cine films, and the EL3301 was the only compact cassette recorder mentioned.

In the review, the EL3301's frequency response was given as 120 to 6000 Hz, whereas that of the battery reel-to-reel EL3586 was 80 - 8000 Hz. I seem to recall that my own 1969-vintage EL3302's frequency response (with a new head) was something like 80 to 9000 Hz.

To confirm a variant of the EL3302, a readable foto of the upper label in the second picture would be useful. The lower label is readable and indicate the week and place of manufacture just as jimmyhaflinger writes.

Another early production December 1966(!) G1 Philips EL3302/54 for US market - 100% Philips with only Norelco logo upsidedown on the shield. They still used the smaller EL3301 case with buttoned-on microphone compartment for those early 1966 devices.
In 1967 they started non flipped logo, newer shield around the controls with printed text, larger Norelco-branded case with integrated microphone compartment, Norelco model number /94 and red color marked rec level knob. The earliest EL3302 I have is from September of 1966!

Just been watching an episode of the classic American 1966/7 Sci-Fi series "The Invaders" that's being run on UK Freeview TV and the character of a reporter is sporting a Norelco EL 3302 !

1972 week 39 indeed. What's on the type label itself?

Edit: I now see I asked it before already, sorry.

I've come in a bit late to this thread, but wanted to share my experiences with these delightful little recorders and ask a few questions.

I have four of them; three 3302s and one 2203, which is the one with automatic level recording. I've replaced belts on a few of them and they generally sound pretty good, given that they were designed in the 1960s. I use mine to record loads of things and the microphones supplied by Philips are of very good quality. I also use a telephone adaptor as well as a device that feeds the telephone signal to the recording input socket. I'm also the proud owner of an extremely rare car adaptor kit for these recorders, which pre-dated the car radio/cassette players of the 1970s.

I'd like to get hold of some of the connection leads that Philips manufactured for these recorders, including the lead that connects the car adaptor to the car radio, so if anyone knows from where these might be obtained, I'd appreciate a shout!

IIRC The leads used were standard 180 degree 5 pin DIN and a less common 240 degree 5 pin DIN, the latter carrying the (line and mic. level) audio and 7.5v Supply, including the connections for the remote 'stop' switch. Somewhere I still have a service manual for the later N2200 series in which the connections should be the same. If I can find that manual it wil confirm the connections. Cables with 5pin 240 degree plugs may be 'unobtanium' nowadays, though.

You can still get the 5 pin 240 degree DIN plugs from Maplin, code HH28F, for under £2.
