Sorry only just noticed this G, I bought these sheets in red & green, they make a huge difference. I've used red on the PIC14 and red & green on the Southern Cross Z80:

After using some (Yellow-tinted) Kapton tape over two 4-digit multiplexed 7-segment LED displays, to keep them exactly aligned whilst soldering these into fairly-loose PCB holes, I left it in place as I found it made a quite nice filter (especially as background colour on many modern ones is white / grey, compared to black on more-vintage types).
And could probably use multiple-layers of this, if wanting background even darker.
Although I think RS ec may still do 'Neutral-Density' display-filters (As well as the Red material, they originally did), and I probably have their original ones.
