Default 1949 BBCtv Bank Holiday footage

This is an absolute delight:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/bankholidays/7105.shtml

A BBC television film unit roving report concerning what was going on around London for the August bank holiday. This would look marvellous on a vintage TV.

Loads more on this section of the BBC website. You'll be lost for hours!

Excellent thank's for posting Steve-I was eight months old then. My 20 year old daughter came down via Victoria today [Brighton and Hove 7/-then]. She was fascinated by post war Britain [and the posh accent]. I only got to visit Ally Pally for the first time last year. Leaving there in 49, with almost no cars about, the BBC Morris Traveller nearly hits another vehicle! There is a noticeable nervousness about being "unscripted" and experimental. Dave

Thanks very much from me too Steve.

What an outstanding collection this is, indeed it will be easy to get lost for a while in all of this! Have just been watching John Noakes flying with the Red Arrows!!

Brilliant!

I'm glad you both enjoyed it as much as I did. The footage of ordinary people going about their holiday activities is wonderful and I found it quite touching seeing these quiet and unassuming folk against a backdrop of war damaged buildings and bomb sites, which, as the reporter noted, were starting to return to nature. The country was battered and financially on it's knees at the time, yet the quiet dignity of the man (and woman) in the street really shines through. I love the fact that when asked their names, people tended to say 'Mr and Mrs such-and-such' rather than use their christian names.

I should think hardly anyone interviewed would have had access to a television set to see their moment of fame when the film was transmitted.

Thank goodness this footage has survived for us to see all these years later. I would also recommend 'Morning Streets' a BBC television documentary on Liverpool in the late 50s.

Many thanks for this, Steve.
lovely " Shooting brake used by the BBC in the bank holiday film. Not sure its a Morris traveller though ,Dave. I think there was a bigger car with the shooting brake bodywork.
something like a Humber. Riley. etc ?
Maybe someone on the Forum has one.
Also had a look at the "Morning Streets" of Liverpool in the late 50s.
I was brought up in Liverpool from the age of four so it was very interesting for me. I do remember bomb sites as I would have been about 13 or 14.
The boy delivering milk on a bike with a carrier on the front brought back memories for me to. I also delivered milk on a bike like that but I had two crates on the front !.
I used to cycle up onto the kerb and deliver milk by just leaning over and putting it on to peoples steps. Until one day at 6.0 in the morning , I fell off after hitting the kerb at the wrong angle. broke every bottle and woke up the whole street. They took me off that round after that... The old steering cart. made many of those.
so,Yes many thanks. i will have to check out some of the other films now.
Regards Peter W....Reelguy

I've wondered about that David. I understand I-player video doesn't allow this but my technical knowledge is zero. I suppose it might be possible to tele-cine! Dave W

PS I'm sure Peter's right about the Shooting Brake!

I worked in Cheapside in 1954 and it looked very much the same then, acres of bomb sites, we used to park the van on one next to Bow church - Funny how I can remember things like that but not what happened five minutes ago.

It's 30 days free trial. There might be a free alternative version somewhere.

Sorry, should be wandering off to a new thread really.

After download you'll probably want to convert the .flv files to a DVD but they won't. The free programme Pazera will handle that and convert them to .avi.

Watching another film that was from 1973 and still black and white made me think how it related more to the 1949 one than now ! I forgot alot of progs were in mono still ,long after colour was introduced.

Film (as opposed to video recording) was used suprisingly late as well.

Oh Dear! I was one year and one month old. Great film. Slower less greedy days. As a young child I had to visit Great Ormond Street Hospital on a regular basis. Bomb sites everywhere filled with 'Marsh Bay Willow herb.' [Fireweed] Bombed bank vaults. Huge bare areas around St. Pauls. Black buildings everywhere with scaffolding. Buildings shored up with massive timbers. Vivid memories soaked up by a young child. John.
