While I was in Cyprus this Summer I noticed this odd looking aerial with what looks like circular directors. The dipole looked to be about the right size for a UHF aerial, and it was pointing in the same direction as other locally mounted UHF aerials. I did wonder if the 'directors' were just there for decoration.
Any ideas?

It's essentially a conventional yagi - the shape of the directors does not affect performance once they're dimensioned correctly - allows for robust construction - no not just for decoration but it does look 'cool'

That looks like the business end of a death ray machine from 'Flash Gordon'. J.

Re post no. 61:

Hmm, I wonder what the cross polarisation rejection performance is ?

Since the top end of the television UHF band has been chopped off we have been experiencing problems with freezing and break up on Freeview channels 81 and 19 in particular. This is the Horsham area that has experienced reception problems since the days of Alexandra Palace.

A very large number of new log periodic types have appeared together with these contraptions complete with pre amps, and they said at the time that 'H' aerials were and eye sore!
The other confusing mess is just behind Horsham Station with the overhead electricity supply mixed in for good measure. John.

Hello John , There are a few of the new type parabolic aerials around Tooting and Mitcham I wondered what the were until I stumbled on a thread on this forum.
Where I live in Hackbridge I am lucky enough to get good Freeview reception using only a small indoor aerial .
I do some times wonder if less than honest aerial dealers convince people they need these new aerials , also there are a fair number of largish conventional UHF aerials have appeared in recent years around this area .
It does seem a bit strange as we are very close to Crystal Palace and the field strength must be very , very high.
And that does look a proper mess behind Horsham station , the aerials are much too close together , and with the closeness of the power cables as well .
I'd love to know what the reception quality is like.
Regards Alan

Lets start counting and see who can find the largest number of aerials on one mast

It looks like a steel mast with a single on an aluminum mast next to it.
If you extract the location from the inset you can have a look around the whole estate as there are others to be seen.
They are all gone now and have been replaced by fire lighters so you will have to take the time line back.
Lots of dishes can be seen on later footage.

Hi all.
Well, Cyprus seems to be the place for Interesting UHF aerials (See Post 61). This trip I found what I first thought might have been a UHF short-back-fire aerial (pictures 1 and 2) but on reflection is probably just a bow-tie aerial with a big reflector. The other two pictures show a conventional yagi but fitted with what looks like anti-bird measures. It’s also the ONLY vertically polarised aerial I have ever seen in Cyprus.

Going off topic a bit, when I arrived in Cyprus this trip, I found very low signal strength from my UHF aerial. Investigation showed badly corroded connections to the balun and a completely open circuit co-ax feed, both centre core and sheath. Close examination of the co-ax cable showed cracks in the insulation caused no doubt by exposure to the sun.

After I replaced the co-ax and cleaned up the aerial connections I was rewarded with good signal strength from the local stations and a multiplex from Israel on channel 29 which I assume is due to tropospheric ducting, but is remarkably stable, being present more often than not.

I've seen the latter type assembled wrong ie: vertical reflector behind horizontal directors. There are at least two examples around here but I'm unable to take a decent close up of them with my mobile phone.

Am I allowed to include broadcast masts, because Rowridge should have a few, transmitting some TV services in horizontal and vertical polarisation, plus it has mixed polarisation VHF FM national radio too (although only on 3 sides of the square mast) There's 36 aerial panels on the top cantilever for starters!

I will have to look out for a coastguard station to compete with that
