Pye SSB200 HF mobile
Hello everyone.
Has anyone got any spare crystals they want to sell for a PYE SSB200. Crystal calculation is freqency + 10.7. Anything for 80m , 40, 20m would be ok. I picked up the PYE SB200 HF set 4 channel at Stockwood park rally. Just want a crystal to test the rig. Question anyone else played with these rigs ? |

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
What crystal can type is it Andy? I would guess HC6/U.
I'll have a look in my rock collection. Are you interested in rocks for 5MHz as well? 73 Roger/G3VKM |

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
Andy,
I have a bag of about 25 HC6/U crystals on 14.4083MHz, which should bring you out on 3.7083MHz. Let me know if you'd like one. 73 Roger/G3VKM |

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
Haven't seen one of those in ages. Knew I should have gone to Stockwood Park.
I might have beaten you to it These probably want a VFO based on an Si570 or similar. I did that to a Southcom SC130 for 60m which I call the rusty box (It is that, I built the case at the Arbury Road training centre as a Home Office Project and never painted it - loong time ago). It was originally top band but 60m came along and more interesting at the time. Last edited by Jon_G4MDC; 7th Jun 2018 at 6:12 pm. Reason: sp! 0/10 |

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
As Jon has said, a synthesiser would be worth considering - at least while you're evaluating the radio. For this kind of thing, I find one of those cheap Chinese si5351 boards combined with a Bus Pirate and a PC to be invaluable. Stick those two on a breadboard and you can have any frequency between about 8KHz and 200MHz with a few keystrokes.

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
If Andy already has a variable-frequency RF signal generator available, might it be possible to inject a test signal from that?

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
I don't see why not. I've done this many times but I'm usually fiddling with VHF stuff and my signal generator is not really stable enough. The si5351 is as stable as a crystal.

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
Agreed, I was just trying to think of ways that Andy could do some basic tests without any initial outlay on parts. A synthesised sig-gen could be used to better effect, obviously.

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
OK. just a quick update.
Crystal arrived from Roger G3VKM. Connected up a few meters of cable for a antenna. Pye making the right sounds.I even put a carrier from my antenna analyser. Receiving signals OK. It appears the microphone has not been wired correctly. So this will be the next job. Then to check out power output through a power meter and dummy load. More news to follow. Andy G6OHM |

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
Hi all not done much with the Pye SSB200. Been busy doing a Bathroom refit.
Have down loaded the manual. Nowhere in the manual is the microphone socket pinout. Have checked through the manual 3 times now. Can anyone help with pinout so I can wire a microphone? Andy G6OHM |

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
Hello Andy, doesn't it use the same DIN style connector with locking ring as used on M(X) 294/3 and W15 back into history? I thought so.
I would be amazed if one of those mics did not work, especially the non electret ones. |

Re: Pye SSB200 HF mobile
looking at the solder side of the 5 pin lockable din plug. Starting at 7 o'clock, clockwise to 9, 12, 3 and 5 approx. 7 O'clock pin 1, 5 O'clock pin 5.
STANDARD Pye mic connections for this were (Pin # first) 1 Mic live 2 mic earth (screen) 3 ptt 4 Earpiece audio live (earpiece earth same as mic earth) 5 ptt I wish i had a £ for every plug I replaced! I did see that rig at DD car boot, was tempted as it was very cheap, but I have enough already! SSB130 with mains psu and the rare SSB170, Europa lookalike! Rob
