Well I've had my best success to date being a novice at fixing VCR's.
I was speaking to Barry (Red to Black) last week and he mentioned that the Sony NV-F75 is a decent deck if you can get one. Well I managed to get the NV-F65 (maybe a slightly cheaper model back in the day?) The seller said it powers up but it's a snow storm. Bought it thinking that it would just be a quick head clean - but this made no difference.
Then I seen this thread ;
http://https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69567

which is nearly 15 years old and discusses all things NV-65B and it lists all know faults. Well I changed the 100uf cap (C18) in the secondary and another cap which appeared to have a dry joint 470uf and now I'm getting a perfect picture and sound! So a big thankyou to everyone who made suggestions in this F65B thread!
While I'm here can I also thank everyone who has helped me in the thread below which I created back in June

http://https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=212084

It's amazing to me that a bad cap can cause a bad picture but it makes sense since if it's a bad cap then the voltage supplied is not constant or too low and eventually when it supplies the head drum the weaker supply means the head drum is not able to do it's job properly (well that's in laymans terms )

Cheers all!

Many thanks to Martin (martiR2R) for the FOC Philips 3 to 5 pin DIN cable that safely arrived yesterday.

Out of interest checked the wiring/connections to see if any attenuating resistor (s) was fitted but no resistors fitted. The cable is Philips EL3768A/10

Many thanks to Dave G60NED for taking the trouble to scan the Sony FD-9B manual for me, almost no trace on the web.

A massive thank you to Glynn, Welsh Anorak for finding me a relatively obscure cable at short notice on a break in Wales. The whole family is grateful. We have music!
