My guess is that it's an RF screen to help prevent any radiation from the underneath of that section of the chassis being picked up by the frame antenna.

From memory this screen is over the output valves so it's a screen for the upper chassis to avoid pickup and a heat shield too, directing the heat out through the back.
I didn't know it was connected to the pick up sockets, presumably to the ground side.

That all makes sense chaps. If it didn't have the earth wire it would be obvious as to some sort of heat shield. But the shield is grounded through the earth of the pick up.

Well a long stint saw the set finished yesterday. It's remarkable I find what you think will be only an hour or so turns into several to rebuild it back into the cabinet. Ready to be delivered this morning to adorn my best pals 'great hall' .
