Default "Interesting" DAC90 project

I just bought a DAC90 which didn't cost a fortune. The description was honest enough, "good case and knobs, but some valves missing and insides have been messed with". I am not unhappy with the radio, but it is such a radical example of invasion by "The Phantom", that I had to share it with you all. Just a quick look over, because I am off out with the band now, but I knew things were awry when I spotted a battery holder neatly sited behind the back cover. Off with the back and whew, the tuning assembly is all there and working, but the wires from the tuning cap disappear under the chassis and I can just see a PCB! The rectifier and output valve are still there, but not much else on top. Interesting project or what? Steve.

A battery DAC90? Is this now a BAC90?

Only some valves missing puzzles me, unless the remainder are for show only. I can't wait to find out what's on the PCB - FM front end perhaps? I take it that the Phantom wasn't so kind as to leave the thing working for you.

You really must put up a few photos of this!

Havent looked underneath yet. Set doesnt work, which is a shame considering the amount of work this "heretic" put in trying to update this nice radio.Obviously a very ancient crime, AM only with the rod aerial clinging to the back cover. Steve.

Wow. I bet you'll have a lot of fun trying to work out what the Phantom was trying to achieve.

Well, I think I may have been wrong about AM only and if there had been any chance that this might have worked, I wouldnt have ripped it all out, but with the original output transformer left in circuit and 500k volume pot, I fear not .Goodness knows what that board came out of, theres a slider switch on it going nowhere, so there no means of band changing anyway

All those beehives and the mustard caps suggest Philips?

That looks like vintage Philips, or at a pinch maybe a Grundig. I don't remember a Grundig with all those beehive trimmers

Probably interesting in it's own right if you had the cabinet it came out of.

Not a good idea in a DAC90 box.

If you get stuck, i have a dac90 chassis somewhere, from memory it is complete apart from valves, o/p tx & dropper.

I had a portodyne princess that someone had "transistorised" using the guts from a roberts r200, looked like whoever did it did a reasonable job of it & it worked well.

I ended up swapping the case for my cracked example, fitting the modified chassis to my damaged cabinet & fitting a small 9v psu gave it a new lease of life, i ended up swapping it for a rough prewar set....

Thats an interesting looking old transistor chassis, if it comes up for scrap, could I put my name on it?

Thanks Dave.

Excellent, you have a PM.

That's what I like about this site, one man's junk is another's interesting trinket.

I'm still hunting for the missing bits, mainly the two IF's and oscillator coils, maybe the tagboard too?

Hi Steve, excuse my ignorance, but will the IFs and oscillator coils from a DAC10 work? I know the DAC90 and DAC90A/DAC10 are definitely not the same, but I have most of a DAC10 chassis going spare. If you can use any of it, you're welcome to it

Gus.
