Re: Grundig RC400 Turntable Help
Amazing!
But does it help you get the deck out of the radiogram? Can you take the back off and peer in from underneath with the aid of a torch to see what's going on? When behaving, with the power disconnected, you should be able to give the pulley a sharp spin with your fingers, and expect the rotor to carry on spinning for a good few seconds. |

Re: Grundig RC400 Turntable Help
OK, at the moment it only rotates with reasonable force from myself and certainly doesn't spin freely.
I can't get the back off easily to see. I've tried an endoscope but it's quite dark in there! |

Re: Grundig RC400 Turntable Help
Is there a model name as well as number? It might help if we know that plus some photo's of the radiogram if that's what it is?

It's a Mandello. Until your post I didn't know that the radio is the RC400!

Re: Grundig RC400 Turntable Help
I dont have one in front of me but the way you get it out (if its the model I'm thinking of) is by lifting the front of the deck up as far as it will go (not very far) and you will see the release mechanism which you slide to one side I think to the right, it does work but is easier said than done.
You cant dismantle the motor as its riveted, but what I do is soak it for some time in alcohol and rotate the spindle till its free. Allow the alcohol to dry off, then re-lubricate with sewing machine oil. BTW,its the bottom bearing that causes the problem so dropping oil down the top bearing wont really help. |

Thanks Michael, I'll give that a go. I think I know the bit you're talking about.

Re: Grundig RC400 Turntable Help
OK, so I've got it back up and running however the playback of 12" and the autoload is a bit hit and miss. I'm not sure if something is bent or if there is a tight spot due to old grease as the turntable seems to 'bog down' at times.
Any hints on what this might be? |

Re: Grundig RC400 Turntable Help
Why just on 12"? Old grease must be removed before you can really judge this.

Re: Grundig RC400 Turntable Help
Heavier (i.e. 12") records can sometimes cause an autochanger to grind to a halt if the drive to the platter is marginal or the mech is sticky and harder to drive than it should be.
