Tape for Elizabethan Z34
Hi there,
Sorry for this complete noob question, but I was given an Elizabethan reel to reel recently and would like to experiment with doing some tape loops. It didn't have any tape that came with it, what sort would I need to get for this type of reel to reel player? Many thanks! |

Best bet is to buy used - you want a tape which is smooth backed, and most stuff you can buy new is matt backed. Something like BASF LGS35 or LH, Emitape, Scotch Superlife or Dynarange. See what's on auction sites.

Spool size doesn't matter if it will fit the machine, though obviously bigger spools hold more tape than small ones.

Fair point - the LZ34 has the BSR TD10 deck, so anything up to and including 7" is OK.

If you are making your own tape loops make sure you use proper splicing tape rather than sellotape (or other sticky tapes) as the sellotape adhesive tends to ooze out over time. A splicing block also helps greatly with lining up the ends.

Re: Tape for Elizabethan z34
What exactly are you trying to achieve with these tape loops... and of what length?
The whole point about a tape loop is that, being a fixed length, it repeats itself every few seconds so you'll need a flanged spindle at a fixed distance and a sprung jockey wheel to keep it under tension while driven by the take-up spool; the feed spool is redundant! If you want to record echoes, repeated for background effects, you'll need a second record head and there the Elizabethan will cause you major headaches! You may be luck to find a proper endless loop tape cartridge (up to 15mins) but these rely on lubricated tape and its unlikely after 20 years these will be fully serviceable. Barry |
