Any flashes on the screen on switch off? Did you try the brightness and contrast settings? So far it doesn't sound bad, but the lack of raster doesn't sound good either! The flyback / LOPT should be making a very high pitched whistle, you probably won't hear it, the buzzing I'd expect to be coming from the scan coils, and the buzzing would be at frame rate. Can you feel any static build up on the CRT face?

Regards,
Lloyd

Yes. the screen did a bright flash like most CRT sets do when they power off. As you stated, the buzzing is from the scan coils.

Looks like the type that had a battery backup so all levels will be at 0 as the battery will be failed by now, turn the brightness up again and look for a raster. same with colour and contrast, some of them came on full volume when the battery was flat. Die hard customers would set the levels and channels every time they came on rather than spend out on a repair. It was common to get sets in after people had been away on holiday as all the setting and channels would reset when not powered for a while, " it was ok before we went away" the lack of brightness fooled them into thinking the set was dead

Yes! Very common around June, July and August. J.

Gradually increase the brightness with the + button - ISTR these took a while to respond so give it time. You should see something on the screen. Since you've established it's quite happy with no arcing or smoke then leave it on a while. I assume you have CRT heaters and EHT because of the flash on the screen on switching off. This shouldn't be too difficult!

I increased the volume and the sound is working. I tried adjusting the contrast, brightness and verical hold but the screen is still black. Should I leave it plugged in and wait until it warms up?

Hi.

I would next try increasing the setting of the G2 control to see if there's a raster. First off though make a note of it's position before adjustment. The next step would be to check the tube base voltages. The G2 voltage should be around 400V on pin 10 of the crt. The cathode voltages should be about 150V on pin 3 (Blue), pin 8 (Red) and pin 12 (Green) of the crt. I can't quite recall what the G1 voltage should be, it doesn't seem to be listed on the circuit diagram. The focus voltage is quoted as 5.4kV.

EDIT: I seem to remember something about the 30V supply resistor going o/c causing a blank raster but it was a long time back. From my rough notes there's a servicing article on the KT3/K30 chassis in TELEVISION magazine Nov 1983 and I'm confident that I can find the issue. I could scan it but I don't have facilities to convert the files to pdf format so it can be uploaded here. I could always scan and send it to you by email attachments.

Regards
Symon

The November 1983 Television magazine is available online here: http://www.americanradiohistory.com/...UK-1983-11.pdf

Article on servicing the KT3 chassis starts on page 22.

The full service manual for your TV can be obtained from freeservicemanuals.info

Link is here, but the manual is not online at the time of posting. You can send an e-mail to request the manual; it will be added in a few days.

Meanwhile you can download the manual for a different KT3 model here:

http://freeservicemanuals.info/en/se...None/None/KT3/

Most of it will be the same. The service manual includes a useful fault-finding flowchart.

Thanks hamid 1, I have to admit forgetting that the American Radio History website have many TELEVISION magazines for download. It's a really good resource, I've been going through the Radio Electronics magazines, very interesting.

Symon

Very useful answer! Thanks. The KT3 manual looks exactly like my set. I sent him an email for my model.

Hi.

There seems to be an anomaly with the American Radio History website in that the Nov 1983 issue along with many others has been listed under "Practical Television" There's a section "Television" and there's only one mag from the 1980's listed which is Dec 1989. I would suggest anyone looking for Television magazines therefore look under it's earlier title Practical Television.

I think the two titles should therefore be consolidated to avoid any confusion or apparent unsuccessful searches.

Symon.

Could you by any chance take a picture of the type label? This model is interesting for me since it's a multistandard model with an unfamiliair execution number (/61).

To see what's the matter with the picture, you could try turning up the G2 (screen) voltage a bit. Also, keep in mind that the contrast is not controlled at the front, but on the back. You may have noticed this yourself but contrast turned all the way down migth result in no picture in this model, I think, so I should mention it.

Here you go. The "ΑΡ. ΑΔ." means license number. And it's actually May 15th 1981, not May 25th as I stated in post #1.

Which is what I pointed out in post #27

I forgot to ask, what is this adjustment for?

Possibly the sound volume preset. It's a long time ago since I service a similar set with such a control.

Thanks for the picture, the label is quite interesting! A font almost like hand drawn, and it doesn't state a factory of origin (no letters in front of the serial number). It may have been made locally in Greece at least partially from imported parts. Are there any other paper labels on the chassis itself or only a duplicate of the same type label?

P.S. The date on the type label might be the date of the approval for the license for this model. If another label is present on the chassis, it might reveal the year and week of production as is customary in most Philips sets.

Yes. It's indeed assembled in Greece. I've seen lots of Philips sets that were assembled here. It has another sticker on the chassis which is from the same date.

Hi guys. Just a small update on this lovely set. I made a quick test video to show you what is doing. As you can see, the sound is working but the screen is competely black. Hope you can figure out what's happening. Link for the vid:

Thanks in advance.
