Can I pester you all for some advice please? Marconiphone model 4130 "Travelmaster".
Hello All and Thank you in advance for your anticipated assistance!
I’ve attached some photos of an old radio that I found in my Dads loft. From the logo it appears to be a Marconi? It needs a lot of TLC and there is no battery so I can’t be sure that it works but I wonder if you could assist me with a model name/number and any idea as to its’ value. I would be very grateful for any info you could provide. Many Thanks Kind Regards |

Looks similar to a Marconi 4122, which had LW, MW and MW Bandspread (for Luxembourg on 208 metres) rather than Shortwave. Value in its current state probably rather low say £10 ?

(lost my reply due to browser "back" button! I agree it does look very similar to the 4130 now Lawrence mentions it!)
Hi, afraid I can't give a model number but would suggest it's a mid to late 1960's transistor battery set. Likely powered by a PP9 originally, I have used a PP3 to test similar sets with success. If it was working when put away it likely still will do, although tin whiskers on germanium transistors would be the main killer. As to value, purely sentimental I would expect. Unless there's something I'm missing, I feel you'd struggle to sell it for more than £5 but if you plan to keep it for sentimental reasons then there's plenty that can be done to bring it back to it's former glory. B&Q sells PP9s, I refill with 6 x Alkaline AA cells.
The SW on a Car convertible MW/LW set is less common outside Germany. |

It's a Marconiphone model 4130 "Travelmaster", circa 1967/68. Here's a scan from the Marconiphone range brochure.

So is there an HMV version as it's really EMI?

HMV variant was model 2138 according to the ERT service chart, don't think there was an Ultra or any others though...

It’s not really EMI, but a Ferguson. EMI licensed the use of their HMV and Marconiphone trade marks to Thorn (whose consumer electronics manufacturing company was Ferguson Radio Corporation) around 1957 and they had a share in the marketing company set up for those two brands: British Radio Corporation (which later became a wholly owned subsidiary of Thorn).

It was a condition of the 20 year licence that Thorn provided these models with a more
"luxury" presentation appearance. A common problem is a stuck Hopt tuning capacitor, but it is possible to remove a circlip and lubricate the spindle bearing without complete dismantling. |
