The other memorable film for me from that CFF collection was "The Flying Eye" which really captured the imagination of my 7 year old self. A professor mounts a miniature TV camera under a model aircraft and invents the first drone.

Film. 'How Television Works 1951'
Just watched the above short film on Talking Pictures. It features a Bush TV12 in detail with some great pictures of the internals. John.

I don't think there is any catch up service on Talking Pictures TV you have to view it whilst its being broadcast, unless someone knows differently.

Re: Film. 'How Television Works 1951'
I only posted the link to the previous thread here on the same subject.
I don't have a link to the actual 1951 British film. However, in an effort to compensate, here's a link to the 1939 American film "How Television Works". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QGcFbygFq8 Steve |

Re: How Television Works
I rather like the term 'sprayed'. When I had to explain how the image was created I used the analogy of a variable spray water pistol moving across the screen, rather like how a car spray painter covers a panel. It was less likely to cause a glazed expression than using terms like scanning and electron beam!

Re: How Television Works
I seem to keep missing this despite monitoring schedules. My intention is always to get a recording. I can't blame it on the fact that there's no CH81 on the very basic Terrestial Freeview service in Rammy as I've managed to blunder yet again here in the South, where [of course] everything is always much better and Freeview is manifest. This happened in August as well when the film "Meet Mr Lucifer" containing vintage TV shots, was shown. A kind member sent me a DVD copy in the end. I thinks it's great as a film [as well as the technical content] although not everyone agrees! If anyone could do that for me re "How Television Works" I'd be really grateful.

Re: How Television Works
It was a CPS Emitron - Cathode Potential Stabilised Emitron.
See: https://www.smecc.org/emitron_television_cameras.htm It was not very successful as the 3" Image Orthicon (IO) was already on the market - disparagingly called the 'American Tube' by the BBC, but by then much better than the CPS Emitron. The EMI tubes suffered from a major defect called 'peeling' where the image seemed to peel away after hitting a highlight. The sensitivity was also poor. The BBC held out against the IO saying that they were noisy and 'contrasty', but it was a losing battle - the IO would reign supreme, especially after the introduction of the 4.5" development by Marconi/EEV and RCA. Re: How Television Works
I was just about to thank you for that info Steve when I realised it was 19-15pm Too Late!
As I'd gone through my Radio Times Xmas Edition only two hours ago, checking out Film 4 and Talking Pictures in particular, I was a bit puzzled I'd made a Victor Meldrew comment on another thread this afternoon and "I can't believe it!" The TPTV schedule is- 1600 Passport To Pimlico 1745 How Television works A 1800 Get Some In 1830 A News Camera Men Documentary B 1850 The Magic Box [Friese Green] The Radio Times listing leaves out A and B My request at post 31* still stands but I suspect that I'm destined to not to see or record this [on Talking Pictures anyway ] Dave W Last edited by dave walsh; 29th Dec 2019 at 8:55 pm. |

'How Television Works' on TPTV Sunday evening
Anyone see the short program on Talking Pictures TV last evening (29th. Dec.) 'How Television works' It must have been made in the late 40s or early 50s, but was an interesting insight into the process, from studio to transmitter and receiver, as to how it was done, including simplified explanations of how both the Camera Tube and receiver picture tube worked.

Unfortunately, I hadn't been aware of it prior to seeing this thread, or I would have watched it.
