The next thing we need is voltage readings from the valve pins.

I have taken DV voltage readings on the following pins on both ECL86 valves and these are as follows.I have not taken readings on pins 4/5 as advised.
Pin 1 318 Volts
Pin 2 0 Volts
Pin 3 0 Volts
Pin 6 0 Volts.
Pin 7 326 Volts
Pin 8 0 Volts
Pin 9 0 Volts

These make no sense at all (except possibly backwards, which puts HT on a(t) and g2). Counting clockwise from the underside of the holder? Meter negative probe to chassis? Heaters alight? Any background hiss/hum from speaker?

I think you are counting incorrectly
Count the pins clockwise from underneath the valve holder.

Sorry I am not clear on your reply. I have taken the readings from the socket with the valves removed. Is this correct or should they be fitted and readings taken from the back.I numbered 1 to 9 by starting at the top and going clockwise.

If I count clockwise from the bottom I assume that No 1 will be the centre pin with an equal number of pins either side(4). Readings taken with valve removed or fitted?

You need to have the valves in their sockets otherwise the readings are meaningless.
The pins are numbered clockwise from underneath the sockets starting from the gap in the pins.

Thanks. When looking at the socket for the valves the gap in the pins is at the top.See photo.

Yes but that is the top of the valve holder
You need to count from underneath the holder.
Top of holder is where the valves plug in, bottom of holder is tags where wires connect.
start at the gap and count clockwise
Take your voltages with the valves in their holder.
I know it seems confusing

I am really sorry to respond again but it is not clear to me. When you say underneath the socket does this mean at the back of the socket where the wires are connected.I have taken it to mean the bottom of the socket where there is no gap to start from which did not make sense with the numbering..

yes I mean where the wires are connected
All this confusion is caused by the valves being mounted on their sides instead of upright as is usual.

I just refitted the valves having removed them and now I am getting the loud noise as soon as I switch the player on. It had been OK the last few times it has been switched on. I will take voltage readings when I can switch on without the noise. Could this be a valve problem.

I did say right at the beginning it would be the valves
Hold the ECL86's with one hand and tap sharply with a screwdriver with other hand.
Do each valve one at a time.

You may induce the noise
Don't tap so hard as to crack the valves though
Those of us used to this sort of thing are old hands.

I have taken readings of DC Volts from the tags at the back of the valves .Here are the readings. During the readings the loud noise kicked in but I found that whilst the probe was on some of the tags it would stop the noise.
Valve 1 Valve 2
Pin 1 0 Volts 0 Volts Grid of Triode.
Pin 2 0 Volts 0 Volts Cathode of Triode.
Pin 3 263 Volts 262 Volts Screen Grid of Pentode.
Pin 6 288 Volts 282 Volts Anode of Pentode.
Pin 7 8 Volts 7 Volts Cathode of Pentode.
Pin 8 0 Volts 0 Volts Control Grid of Pentode.
Pin 9 123 Volts 92 Volts Anode of triode.

Once the noise had stopped I tried inducing it by tapping the valves as suggested. One of the valves made the noise but it was not continuous just when it was hit.

Yes it will respond when hit, then die away. Edward

This does sound either like a faulty valve, or a poor valveholder contact, as suggested in post 2(!). Have you tried dunking the valve pins in a bottle lid filled with Servisol, then inserting/removing them several times to clean and polish the contacts?

Thanks. I have sprayed the valves holders a few times with Servisol although never dipped the pins. I have cleaned the pins with wire wool and the valves have been inserted/removed on several occasions.I never find it easy to refit the valves as some of the pins are not quite straight. If you think it would be worthwhile dipping them in Servisol I will try this before I look at replacing the valves.

Could you confirm if the voltages are correct from the valves. Thanks.

If you've cleaned them with, say, an emery cloth and sprayed the pins and the holders with Servisol, dipping them will make no real difference except to waste your fluid. You can carefully straighten the B9G valve pins with thin pliers or tweezers. Do get used to inserting valves without fear, as this action also improves conductivity. What makes you think these valves need replacing? Edward
