Default Nagra 3 external power supply

I have a Nagra 3 Mono recorder which I would like to run off a 12v car battery.

Can this be done?
If it is possible , does anyone have the knowledge of how I can do this.

Regards
Mike

The voltage from a car battery can be converted to any voltage you like, and certainly with enough power for a recorder. What voltage does the Nagra want?

The Nagra 3 battery compartment takes 12 D cells so that's 18V.

I think the recorder is marked 12 to 30v but it's positive to case!

If you just want to run the Nagra from a car battery on its own, then you just need a connector with a cable (and an in-line fuse) and a floating battery can be grounded at either end

But if the battery is still conected to the car or anything else which forces negative ground, then you'll need an inverter to reverse the polarity

Or you need a classic car

For any external supply you would need a 6-pin locking Din plug. The currently most available one in this country seems to be the Lumberg SV60 which CPC list for about £5 though I think they have a minimum purchase of £8 for free postage so it might be cheaper from Farnell or RS. Then you would have to figure out which pin to connect to positive and which to negative.
As the Nagra 3 will operate with a voltage as low as 11v, it would be much simpler to use 12 rechargeable D cells which would give you 14.4V and last a long time between charges unless you really need to connect the machine to a battery installed in a car.
It would be quite easy to make your own power supply from a no longer used laptop power supply of sufficient voltage and current and the Din plug. There is nothing magic about an original Nagra power supply, except the price people want for them.

I have obtained a handbook which indicates I can use the 6 pin Din socket.
The battery will be free standing so the positive earth will not be a problem.

So just need to order a Din plug and I will let you know the results.

Using a 6 pin Din it is possible to run the recorder.
With a 12 volt supply the consumption is approx. 150 ma during playback and
200 ma during record.

The Din pin connections are as follows
1 Internal battery charger
2 Earth and External positive supply
3 Line input
4 Remote control
5 External supply negative
6. 10v regulated output for aux equipment

Best to get a diagram of the numbering of the DIN plug/socket before you start wiring up. It's not very intuitive.
