Default Any info on this TV ?

I might be able to get my hands on this his little Pye. What's the model? age? spec ? Someone has connected it straight to the mains and turned it on so it might be well toasted.

If it’s a 19”, then its a Pye 40F. If it’s a 16”, it’s a Pye 31F.

Both use a hybrid chassis. The germanium integrated UHF/VHF tuner has a rather small transistorised IF panel fixed to the rear if it. The main PCB is a square shape and all valve.

It dates from 1965-66.

The first major hybrid from Pye, I had to fix them, not a fan. The next model was a big improvement.

My memory of it was patterning on the picture from something in the tiny IF strip panel

That was one of the problems, the main valve PCB was OK it was the Tuner IF strip that was a problem in various ways.
When put at the side of the Bush TV135U hybrid there was no comparison in either picture quality or reliability.

The 31F uses a mains dropper, whereas the 40F uses a mains autotransformer.

The speaker is mounted on the bottom of the 31F cabinet (i.e. facing down to whatever the TV is standing on), but front facing on the 40F.

I think that Pye/Ekco were trying too hard and too soon when they produced this chassis.

The tuner pushbuttons required a lot of force to operate and, as has been said, the IF strip/tuner combination did suffer from patterning on some channels, but there were several mods to the IF strip during its production life.

I have a very late Ferranti equivalent to the 31F which seems not to suffer from such patterning.

It's a shame, as the valved circuitry on the main PCB (which had many similarities to the previous Pye/Ekco all valve chassis) was perfectly fine.

Is this the model where the push buttons used to fly off often hitting the users in the face when changing channel?

Thanks so much for the info. I'll get to have a look on Monday but I'm already not feeling the love for it lol. I'll see how it looks in the flesh.

Press, bang, OWWWW! Yes black eyes, especially the Ferranti versions that had the tuner angled upwards.. The first mod was a 6" nail with the head cut off issued by Pye. You placed it between the 'bash' plate and the main frame to stop the end of the buttons being sheared off.It sort of worked but as Greg has mentioned the final solution was the aluminium ended knobs. I hated this chassis. Patterning and just overall nastiness. As mentioned, the main chassis was very reliable but the tuner/IF was a real problem. The 368/67/68 chassis were very nice and worked well.
As DV has posted, it was just too clever, too soon. John.

Modified push buttons has Greg states with the metal ends and a rubber cushion in the mechanism to cushion the release.

It sounds like these sets weren't liked much back when they were still in service!
I only ever saw one in the early 1970's I scrounged it from the scrap pile around the back of the local TV shop.
It looked very modern compared to the usual sets that I got my hands on at the time...
Unfortunately it was missing the IF panel from the rear of the tuner so I never did get it going. Now after all these years I know why it had been scrapped!

Surely this set is worth preserving, there cannot be many left...even as an example of how poor they were it's an interesting story of how Pye got it wrong!
Wasn't the same tuner used in the Dual standard Pye and Ekco colour sets? Presumably modified to prevent the buttons breaking?

Same or similar with silicon transistors and those button mods described earlier.

Story at the time was Mr Stanley wanted to be one of the first with the Dual Standard hybrid. I am sure the set designers would have got it right if given more time, probably would have delayed and brought out the 368 series.

Anyway they were not well liked, probably worth preserving, there are a few about on the forum.

That brings back memories! A Ferranti version? Quite rare. It's appearance suggests it has been quite reliable. There were always examples of troublesome chassis that worked as the makers intended. John.

Yes, a Ferranti T1158 (with the 16" chassis version) and in extremely good condition (very little used).
