Default Pye FM set just white noise...

Hi All
A piano key 1203 radiogramophone, worth improving, and tolerated by the g/f in her living room as it supports a colony of china fairies (other group noun suggestions welcome !).
On vhf there's only white noise and no stations.
I presume then that the I.f. is okay.
Is there anything can be inferred by this ? The solid state decoder maybe ?
Coincidentslly dead on a.m too...
Advise most welcome
Thanks jm.

Dirty wavechange switch?

ECC85 are renowned to not last long, and possibly a second fault in the AM section.

Open HT dropper resistor.

Check all the voltages for a start.

This radiogram is very unlikely to have a solid state decoder (or any decoder for that matter) unless someone has attempted a modification. Have you connected an external FM aerial? This needn't be anything elaborate...a piece of wire a few feet long will do for starters if you are in a reasonable FM reception area...don't expect first class results with this though...it's just to establish if the radio is actually capable of working. You can make up a better aerial later.

Has it been overhauled or serviced? Chances are the pushbutton assembly will need a good clean and if not already done, a number of capacitors will require replacement.

The only solid state items are the diodes for the AM and FM demodulators. No decoder. The ECC85 is a possibility so try that first.

If you have white noise, the audio stages must be working, does it work on the gram setting if you tap the cartridge with the volume up? Both left and right channels?

You say dead on AM as well?
The ECH81 is AM mixer/oscillator and FM 1st IF amp as well so if that is duff you will lose both.
Put it on AM and an AM transistor radio next to it. Sweep the tranny through the same waveband, any squeals and whistles?

After that its EF89 as common 2nd IF amp and then EF80 which I think is only on the FM detector.
