Unless you understand the previous posts you can't really just get some batteries and hope for the best-it's not usually that instant even for someone experienced. Value? My guess is just a few pounds. Check out E-Bay.
The usual process is to test and work on the set thoroughly first and THEN maybe think about applying power. I'm not so experienced in that area myself [especially battery sets that I've never been very taken with but at least the voltages are a bit safer]. If you take the same approach to mains gear the result could even more disastrous for the set and perhaps even yourself. "Be carefull out there" as they used to say in NYPD Blue..
