Hi,

In the old AVO CT446 transistor tester the batteries are called U10 batteries, you can for instance find replacement batteries here: http://www.smallbattery.company.org.uk/sbc_u10.htm

In the more modern AVO CT166 & CT167 you can use standard 9V batteries but you will most probably need to make new battery connectors as they used PP7 or PP9 batteries with a wider spacing of the electrodes, some of these testers come with single electrodes which you can fit, although it will be tight, on a standard 9v battery. They can be found at the same source as above.

I do not have any connection to the source mentioned above and I do not know anything about them, I only know that they are a good source of finding information on old batteries and replacement types!
