Re: Morrison’s Patent “Facile” Electric shade remover
The way this house shakes, rattles and rolls when a freight train comes through, I wouldn't be too sure about that

Does anyone do a special tool for retracting the "mouse trap" style springs that hold modern glass shades.
One false move and you've got glass splinters flying everywhere, and don't ask me how I know that

A third hand?
As promised, here are a couple of pics of a more sophisticated device. The opening dimension and closing tension is adjustable by means of the handy wing-nut provided. No brand name is apparent. Someone has suggested it could alternatively be an antique champagne cork-puller... Phil

Re: Morrison’s Patent “Facile” Electric shade remover
It resembles GEC's 1912 GEC "shade fixer" ( #12).

That sparked a distant memory, I believe that the shade holder thread is on BSG, British standard (copper) gas thread, a real throw-back.

It was the nut that compresses the olive on a 22mm fitting if my memory serves me right.
The lamp is still working with home made LED bulbs in it. They are E14 threads and in early 2010 lamps with a good spread of light were not available so I made some. |

Re: Morrison’s Patent “Facile” Electric shade remover
I think the thread is 26tpi, used for all sizes of brass tube. An account of how the brass BC lampholder dimensions and thread were decided on was recounted in an issue of the GEC house journal some years ago, but I can't lay my hands on my copy at present.
According to Machinery's screw thread book, 26tpi British "Standard" Brass Thread was never an official standard, but was generally followed in the UK and Germany. The Leica camera lens screw thread has this pitch rather than the very close 1mm pitch. |
