Re: uy85 to diode conversion
UY85 data: http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/link.php?target=002597CA
The heater is 38V 0.1A so should be replaced with a 390 ohm resistor. Unless the heater is open circuit, you should leave the old tube in place. Replace tbe plate / cathode connections with a 1N4007 and 200 ohm surge limiting resistor in series. Paul |

Re: uy85 to diode conversion
UY85 valves are still readily available here as they were used in loads of sets, so rather than modifying you could post a request in the Wanted section for a good used one.

Re: uy85 to diode conversion
thanks to both pauls. i think the price of tube plus shipping to here is probably more than this radio is worth,i just want to see if the rest of the radio is o.k. before investing much money in it. the diode mod is easily reversable once i find a tube, thank you very much for the info,do you have a schematic by any chance?

Re: uy85 to diode conversion
I would not recomend this mod,as Paul says UY85's are readily available, and using this gives the set a gradual build up of HT to the correct level. The HT with the solid state diode would be excessive, while the valves are heating up!
This can shorten their life. |

Re: uy85 to diode conversion
You haven't told us the make or model number of the radio!
Click the banner in the top right corner and see if it's available from me, first. |

Re: uy85 to diode conversion
This must be similar to a common radio. The nearest I can find is a B1X01A on a Dutch site but it is an AM-FM set. If you can supply the valve (tube) lineup maybe can do some more digging.
Rich.

Re: uy85 to diode conversion
Hi Phil, Radio Tube Supply, 23 Delaware ave, Poland, Ohio 44514 stock these new for $6.99. I have bought several valves from this company and find them very good. Cheers, Malc.

Re: uy85 to diode conversion
In that case, try this site: http://radiotechniek.cjb.net/radiotechniek.php You will need to sign up (free) in order to download circuits (also free). He has a vast number of European circuits available. You may well find that the B1X01A is very similar to yours.....same tube line-up anyway. Rich.
