Default Definitely NOS!

I've just received a NOS Mazda 10P14 output valve for my Murphy A362, and judging from the box , it's as old as the radio (1955 - 64 years old).

The price of the radio was £16/8s. 7d plus P.T. and the valve would be £14/6s plus P.T.

l wish I could go back to 1955 and show the servicemen the price a single valve would cost today, especially something like the KT88!

Cost today was£14.50 delivered.

There is a letter P under the 10P14, presumably a date stamp.

Hi Ken,
You have a typo in the valve price...
That's 14 Shillings and 6 old Pence (All of 72.5 new pence...)

That box has me scratching my head! The valve inside is labelled Mazda, but the box is labelled Ediswan, Siemens Edison Swan, AEI and Mazda. I wasn't aware of any connection between G.E.C. (Mazda, Marconi & Osram) and A.E.I. (Ediswan, Siemens & Edison Swan). Can anyone shine some light on this?
Colin.

That valve, at today's price is probably cheaper in real terms than the 14/6 a new valve of the same type would have cost 64 years ago!

Have a look here:

https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/AEI:_Lamps_and_Valves

as a starting-point for the various mergers/buyouts over the last century.

[I never realised that the AEI/Siemens/Mazda/BTH/Edison/Swan empire also owned "Clix" - makers of wander-plugs, valve-sockets and a particularly-deadly range of 2-pin plugs!]

Very much used plugs and perfectly safe as long as they were fully tightened.

14/6 plus 25% purchase tax is the equivalent of about 4 gallons of petrol in 1955 -that would cost you about £23.00 today.

Hi,

That's just inflation. In the early 70's I was paid the standard LNR rate of 30p per hour
as a barman. That would have bought me 3 pints of mild or 20 Players Navy Cut
cigs (31p). What would those cost now?

Kind regards
Dave
