Default Neatest cutting of a tag board

Good afternoon all.

Please let me know the best (neatest) way of cutting the attached tagboard.

I'd use a junior hacksaw.

Otherwise you could score it on both sides, using a steel rule to keep the scores straight, and then snap it and tidy up the ends with a flat file.

(Probably the neatest way would be to machine it, cutting through from the back surface using a CNC router or a milling machine and the narrowest possible cutter, but I'm guessing that if you had either of those things you probably wouldn't be asking the question .)

Cheers,

GJ

Thank you.

Have thought about both ways but as usual, my first stop is always here first as always some great info/ideas on here.

Snapping can flake the SRBP. I'd go for a saw followed by a file. It helps if you can sacrifice one pair of turrets and saw across through their holes. File to final size and finish.

Measure out & mark with a steel rule & a scriber. Cut slowly and carefully with a fine-toothed hacksaw. File away the coarseness of the cut with a flat file, then finish with a piece of P180 sand paper laid flat on a hard surface. Any imperfections can be seen against the edge of a steel rule or square. Most tagboards from yesteryear are made from Paxolin. Best practice first on a gash piece of paxolin or similar resin board.

Score a line for the cut with a Stanley knife and steel ruler.
Then slowly with a junior hacksaw. Or use a Dremel and the thin diamond disc if you have one. The score helps keep the cut straight and helps stop chattering.

A fret saw, very fine blades and with a bit of care a well finished cut. A much underrated tool for those odd shaped holes one needs for connectors too.

The greater depth of a normal hacksaw blade makes it less wandery than a junior one. Go for as many teeth per inch as you can find and cut with the saw at a horizontal angle that keeps several teeth at once through the thickness of the paxolin. It's slower than ripping through with the blade perpendicular but it's smoother and straighter.

I've used modelmakers saws before to cut paxolin, a very neat finish indeed. They cut on the back stroke rather than forward, this allows more control than you'd think.
Same at this one in the link:

I am in no way connected with the above company just a satisfied customer.

I've done it in the past using a tile-saw [the flat-bed motor-powered version] which cuts the workpiece using copious water-lubrication [with a dash of detergent added to the water].

As mentioned, SRBP/Paxolin has a tendency to tear/split if you use an aggressive saw; supporting the back of the cut, using a high speed and a slow feed-onto-the-blade is essential. That's where the water comes in - it cools things and stops your cutting exercise turning into a burning-exercise.

I've cut SRBP/Paxolin up to 6mm using this method, and the result is rather good.

Years ago when making your own pcb was the thing to do, I made fibre glass board cutter based on the tile cutter idea. A small 12 volt motor powering a diamond impregnated disc and two parallel rods. The motor slides along the rods which are mounted on two aluminium pillars. I attach the workshop vac cleaner up, as the dust is not good for the lungs. If any one would like a picture I think I could sen one. Ted

By the by, just thought I'd mention it - some serious tag de-soldering & cleaning is needed. I ken it's off topic, but there is heaps of advice on de-soldering, (and Paxolin cutting), available via "Search". Probably via YouTube as well these days.

I realise that not everyone will possess a bandsaw, but that's what I always use, both for tagboards & PCB material, including glassfibre.
Works really well with a fine blade.

David.

I use a dremmel type tool with a fine cutting disc. Score both sides and snap, finish with file.
