how do I tell the difference between un-marked lin and log volume pots

Put them on a meter and look at the relationship of wiper travel to the indicated resistance.

With a Lin pot the resistance with the control in the centre would have the same reading from centre to either end.

Measure the pot end-to-end to confirm its overall value. Most pots have very wide tolerances, so don't be surprised if a 10k pot is anywhere between, say, 8k and 12k.
Then set the pot half way up and measure between the slider and one end. A linear pot will measure about half the value, while a log pot will be something like 10 or 15% to the "anticlockwise" end (the one normally connected to earth in an audio circuit). HTH. |
