Thank you Ricard, all clear now. One of my old Grundigs had a yellow band in the middle which I guess was home user applied.

"Sharpie" permanent markers are available in a wide range of colours, and work well as colour filters on glass and clear plastics. Acetone , IPA or meths will clean it off should you need to.
