Re: Tape erasure - bulk
Been thinking of getting a bulk eraser for some time and after reading this Thread have very recently purchased a Weircliffe Model 27.

Agreed. Something of 'buying a pig in a barrel!' I think. It was my first knowledge of them, and I suspect they don't have much info themselves on tech stuff. Other than specific enquiries there's probably no online link

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
The Weircliffe Model 27 has arrived, smaller than I expected and heavy for its size. As per the Operating manual and name plate, the full model number is BTE 27K.
The box and packing were the original Weircliffe. There is a test certificate dated 1993 but it has a different serial number from the unit. This serial number on the certificate is on the printed label on the box but the number on the box has been crossed through and the actual serial number on the unit is handwritten on the box label ? The manual states it is suitable for magnetic media up to 4" so will be interesting to see how it copes with larger spools of tape. The 4 screws underneath are tempting for an internal inspection David |

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
There is another Leevers Rich available on ebay.
Very early sixties and contrary to the description it will do nothing for evening hard drives. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402347502111?ul_noapp=true |

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
Agreed. They seldom come up. Not so with the handheld types of which I've just bought one - of several available. Due to some kind of Murphy's Law I found another one, also a Ferrograph model included in the packaging of an old reel to reel, one of the cheapest I'd bought which also included several used tapes. Thinks the man just wanted to clear out

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
To me, the most sensible compromise between size and function would be the ones like the Leevers-Rich mentioned above. The larger Weircliffe's where one inserts the tape would although very practical seem to be rather large. The handheld ones on the other hand require a bit of skill to properly erase the tape without residual thumps and noises. Whereas switching a machine on, moving the tape up to it, placing it on a spindle, turning it a few turns, and then removing it slowly would seem be very manageable for a few reels at least.
What are the opinions of those that have actually used the various types of these machines? |

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
Haven't looked into the handheld rules yet, but do they have a maximum cycle time and can harm result if the session is too long? This because I thought of setting up a jig to hold the tip near a rotating tape

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
Pretty much all tape erasers can only be used for short periods of time. Hand held types rely on the fact that you feel them getting hot and pause use. Probably best not to circumvent that.
The early Leevers Rich type relied on the loud hum to remind people to switch it off. This did not always work so the new range incorporated a thermal cut out on each coil. |

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
For general reference instruction page from my Weircliffe BTE 27 manual is attached (have still not tested it).
Inside the manual was a little instruction leaflet for the Leevers Rich Leeraser Model LR70/71, also attached for reference. David |

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
Indications are positive that it is in good order. An owner who was careful enough to preserve those is unlikely to have abused it.

Re: Tape erasure - bulk
Interesting - the Leevers Rich Leaflet has been over labelled PRECO. They were the company run by a former Leevers and previously BIAS electronics Chap Tony Costello - he must have taken over manufacture / stock when Leevers Rich packed up and left the Wandsworth factory. They also sold the F500 tape machine which I think was a badged Schlumberger.
