Default JVC HR-3320EK Playing issues

Hi,

I just bought a vintage JVC HR-3320EK.

The FF and REW works fine however,i'm having issues making it play.

I press play button the tapes is moving then approx 3 seconds then it stops. I press play again then the same problem.

I can see the tapes moving freely and both tape reels move freely.

I did clean all the parts.

Any suggestions?

I think i need new belts as well?

TIA

Does the tape counter run when you are in play mode? These usually have a hall effect sensor that stops the machine if it's not turning.

Also, it might not be completing the loading cycle properly so a new loading belt (and new belts in general) would be highly recommended.

You can try a temporary fix by placing a normal rubber band over an existing belt to see if that changes anything.

Not on those early piano key machines.

Most likely the take up is weak and some tape is spooling into the machine. Run it with the covers off to verify.

Try pressing pause immediately after play, if the machine still shuts down then the issue is not with the Hall sensor which is definitely fitted to these machines to detect loss of takeup. It's likely to be either the head drum is not running at near enough the correct speed or more commonly, the pulley below the drum which is driven by a belt has slipped down it's shaft slightly due to a loose grub screw.

The pulley has two small magnets attached which pass over a pickup head, the resulting pulses are used to generate the drum flip flop signal. If it's missing or low in amplitude the mechacon will shut down the machine after 3 seconds.

John.

As Jayceebee suggests the favourite is the drum flywheel sitting low. Common problem in the day. Or more obvious, the drum belt has come off.

Thank you all for your feedback...

The top is removed ,and I can see the tape counter running. The loading cycle is complete as the tape runs freely.

I agree I feel all belts must be replaced any idea from where I can get hold of new set?

Will try to put a rubber band and press Pause immediately after Play to eliminate the hall sensor. I will also make sure the the belt has not slipped down the shaft.

Great suggestions hopefully I can get it to work.

Thank guys you for your support.

Merry Xmas to all

Cheers
Al

There is a belt kit from Australia:
http://www.telespares.com.au/index.p...ucts_id=317340
A shop here in Greece also sells the same kit. I bought one for my HR-3330 and it fitted perfectly. If everything in the machanism is running OK, then your problem is likely the system control board isn't detecting take-up reel/capstan/drum movement or the hall effect sensor has failed. These problems usually require a scope to troubleshoot them.

Merry Christmas!

Good to see you've got it sorted. I hope you manage get to find a set of belts, they're getting scarce now. A forum member who lives near my location sourced his from New Zealand of all places.
