Can anyone identify the set in this picture?
Hi, my friend who's writiing a book has asked me if I recognise the attached set. It seems to have a typewriter wired to it. Also, if there is some info re operation. I've never seen this before. Many thanks, 73s David

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
It looks more like the operator is listening to Morse code and typing out the result.
The head phone cable is confusingly running around two sides of the type writer. |

Ah yes, pic is slightly confusing.. So it must be in rx mode of course. That makes more sense.

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
Hi, found more info. It's Irish uniform..
"That is std issue Irish army bulls wool uniform which in use to 1961! Sgt, 4 Brigade, 2nd Division." Go figure, maybe it's a modified or custom radio? I've also never seen anything similar. |

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
I'm no expert but could that morse key be WW2, possibly key and plug assembly No. 8 type ?

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
It has a 'family resemblance' to the WS-18 set.
Could the shape of the meter fascia narrow down the country of manufacture? |

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
Hi, when i saw it first I thought it was an 18 set , but maybe its a custom case for the Irish army at the time. I know they did use a lot of UK sourced radio kit as you would expect. I've asked my friend for the scan of the original photo and will up it to dropbox as its higher res.
Thanks for help so far, I've passed it on with much gratitude to everyone. |

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
The Wireless set SR OS made by PYE may have used the same case.

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
I think you're right, it certainly looks very similar to the sound-ranging sets of WW2, with a slightly different front panel layout. The Royal Signals site has a couple of articles with photos.

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
Hi, further info re that set. I just got sent following text. (Were made in Ireland?!)
After many trials, a design for a Battalion wireless set was finally approved and a contract placed for the home manufacture of 130 sets. These have since been delivered and are in the course of being issued to units. ‘A contract was placed with Messrs. Pye (Ireland) Ltd for the supply of 130 ‘Battalion Sets’ and these have since been delivered, together with the necessary accumulators, etc. ( link of orig scan if it's allowed https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lVt...w?usp=drivesdk ) Last edited by thx1138; 16th Mar 2019 at 10:10 pm. |

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
Well, there's an early Irish registration number on the truck- ZD **** at a guess. Dublin, 1940-1947.

Re: Can anyone identify this set in picture
Probably in the Pye factory at Dundrum. Or at least notionally so. Philips bought Pye in 1967? I think the factory closed in 1970. Sign was still there in 1971.
Sadly unlike other military outfits, ANYTHING obsolete or surplus was destroyed. I know someone that served and watched radios being destroyed. Perhaps it was worries that the IRA might obtain items? I have at least two Dundrum made Irish Pye domestic models. |

Re: Can anyone identify the set in this picture?
Radiomuseum.org says that PYE (Ireland) Ltd started in 1935.

Re: Can anyone identify the set in this picture?
Just a heads up. My colleague has a meeting at their archives next week. If they find a manual or any formal description I will be pleased to share so at least this set is formally identified. Were extremely grateful with all the input so far. Hopefully more info next week.. 73s
