Default Pocket transistor id please.

Picked this up today from a second hand store while on my break. Anyone recognise it?

John Joe.

The tin-cased 'lozenge' shaped transistors suggest they're Newmarket - which will have "NKT" part-numbers.

This in turn hints at an early-sixties UK manufacturer (I don't recall NKT transistors being exported to Hong Kong etc. for fitment into "empire made" radios]

I can't help, but it sure is a pretty thing. The styling is plain but attractive, something I always like. The only thing I recognise is the Newmarket transistors.

Hi lads, thanks for chipping in. I did think it was of British manufacture because of the license plate inside the back cover.

There seems to be an odd bit of grill stuck in a small square recess on the front, perhaps originally the was a makers plate or mark here

Yes Andrew, I do like it's styling. Very simple and it's in great cosmetic nick too. It seems to take 3 N size batteries.

Regards, John Joe.

That's for the Pye logo referred to earlier.

Correct. The Trader Sheet for this set says that it uses 3 Ever Ready D23 cells, which was their number for the N cell.

N cells?
NiMh would be easiest to get these days.

Yes; my local Poundland sells (for £1!!) a 'mixed packet' of an N, an E23 and an E27, and one other. £1 for an 'N' might be expensive, but at least you get the others to play with....

N cell, Lady battery, LR1. Used commonly in fish bite alarms. Door remotes, etc.
Still widely available, even on Amazon. Other suppliers are available, see ebay for reliable GP ones.

'N' size alkaline cells are available from CPC :-https://cpc.farnell.com/w/c/electric...ry-size-code=n
and probably other places too.

Note the early employment of the miniature Toko type IF transformers.

A bit off-topic, but there's a good little story about IF transformers in (I think) the 3rd edition of Radio Radio.
It comes from one of the designers of the PAM 710 transistor radio. He said that because of the rather poor performance of early transistors, it was important to get maximum power transfer between the stages in the RF and IF strips. He was in charge of the in-house design of the IF transformers and went to great lengths to optimise the magnetic circuits and carefully manage the Q etc, even specifying brass pins to reduce any disruption of the magnetic properties.
However, when the production guys got hold of it they used standard steel pins which protruded into the magnetic parts, completely ruining the gain/bw performance. Rather than go back to the original design, they reduced the IF to 120 kc/s to get the performance back.
It must have suffered from some pretty bad images!

Newmarket was a Pye company later taken over by GE.Their earlier transistors were designated V/10,V/30 etc later changing to NKT.It would be interesting to know which types are fitted as this might give a close date of manufacture.I have an booklet of application notes dated October 1959 and all the transistors in it are the V/ series.Peter.

Morrisons definitely sells a Duracell packet of 2 N cells for around £3.50 I think.

Yesterday I obtained 3 N cells from Dealz (Poundland in Ireland) so last night I decided to have a go at getting this working. I replaced the electrolytics, as they were all showing signs of leakage.

I then cleaned the volume pot and wave change switch with servisol. It brings in Radio 4 on the light preset quite well and medium wave is quite sensitive.

Sadly the little lugs on the back are worn so the back cover fitting isn't as tight as it could be, but for 55 years plus it's in remarkable condition. I expect the N cells, being alkalines, will last a long time.

Cheers, John Joe.
