Most crystal sets had an option for loading coils to extend their frequency range. Marconi 1920's sets offered coil-sets right down to 3200 meters (93kHz)

John, you're lucky that the GB Battery didn't deposit acidic crud inside your cabinet. 'Twould be great if you can rescue the cardboard cover & scan it. Then re-pack with AA or AAA rechargeable cells. Some folk baulk at making up a battery of 6 or so cells, due to the soldering required. But I've found with careful cleaning, rubbing with 600 gauge emery paper, pre-tinning with 60/40 fc solder, that reliable GB(or even HT) packs can be made to fit inside old saved Every Ready, Exide, etc., cardboard covers. Judicious use of superglue or araldite, and pvc tape binding, can keep the cells & leads in place, and avoid movement.

Regards, David
