Default Sony TC-200

I got well and truly fed up with Tandbergs so picked up another one of these. The unit is mechanically sound and lubed up nicely.
Now the bad part … there's very faint sound from both channels...
only one speaker is working as a connector has been broken on the speaker cable ..
What would be your first order of attack?
Regards Paul

I would give the heads a good clean, then clean the line/speaker switch and see if the line out signal is good. If it's ok then it's probably an amp fault, if not I would check the bias oscillator was ok.

I suppose down to the age of these units you're gonna be very lucky to find a reel to reel that will work first time without any intervention.
I have several machines that don't work, the only one still okay and is the only machine I can rely on is an Elizabethan LZ-34...but it sucks as a main machine.....

Now I've had a look ….. channel one is making a very quiet sound , channel two is silent
I've cleaned all the valve pins , pots and switches.
Looking at the circuit , I suppose really I'm looking for a cause that affects both channels at the same time ..

No sound on known good recordings? No sound on self recordings? Have you checked any voltages?

You don't state if you are working from the service manual (available from HiFi Engine)
and that there are two versions - the early one is all valved and the later one is mainly
valved with a transistor loudspeaker amplifier stage.

This plug has to be connected …..volts across C1-1 and C1-2 is 170v …. valves all light up so 6v works ..C110, 210 and C2 are oil filled paper ...C110 or 210 shows a 177 ohm resistance across it, the other nothing.... C2 shows no resistance

Looks like there's an output transformer missing unless I'm mistaken.

In the photo's you've supplied I can only see one output transformer so I'm not joking unless the other one is hidden away somewhere.

The output transformer is a special according to the schematic I'm looking at.
