Ah ha! This is the one I built - from a 1978 article.

I used it as a visual 'attraction' for new electronics students at a college. It worked! Quite a few signed up after talking about the 'science' behind its operation.

There was also a series that ran from Aug to Nov 1968 in Practical Electronics, Experiments with Sound, light and Colour.
