Default Fire at Anchor Surplus, Nottingham old cattle market

There are news reports of a large fire involving multiple buildings and gas cylinders exploding. One photo shows it close to the gates so it sounds to be close to Anchor Surplus.

I hadn't been there for absolutely yonks but was working at the footy ground the other day, so dropped in. It all seemed a bit quieter and less interestingly stocked than in the past (rose-tinting....?) but at least got a slab of GP 1289-type batteries for a quid and a big fat ceramic resistor for PSU testing for 50p, so slightly like "old times"! Also got a bargain of a proper artery-clogger breakfast at the Silly Sausage caff nearby.

It'd be a big shame if it has been affected, there can't be many places like that left.

Chris has pointed to a still photo on a website. It shows a big fire, but with Anchor's buildings appearing silhouetted in front of it. Let's hope they've been lucky.

Footage on the same website taken from a high building some distance away, shows it's a very big fire.

It certainly looks like it's Anchor that's gone up in flames but there's also a large Auctioneers close by.

https://twitter.com/Notts_TV/status/...shire-46092394

Anchor are not just at Meadow Lane, Nottingham, but also have a large depot at Ripley between Nottingham and Derby, open seven days a week.

Anchor isn't just the largest military surplus outfit in the UK, but in Europe.

https://www.anchorsupplies.com/home

https://www.anchorsupplies.com/virtualtour

One of the items they sell is surplus police riot helmets with polycarbonate shatterproof visors. Excellent for woodturning or when using a chainsaw etc, and a bargain at under £20.00. I don't have one as I have a Trend Airpro powered face shield/respirator, which are ludicrously expensive especially for occasional use.

https://www.anchorsupplies.com/revie.../category/161/

Over the years, Anchor have had lots of ex military radio gear - Clansman etc, which doesn't interest me, but seemingly does others.

Anchor website says their Nottingham depot will remain closed until further notice.

They are on the corner of Incinerator Road.

BBC news says
Quote:
The fire service said six premises had been destroyed including Bed City, SB refrigeration, Fresh N Fruity, D&B Carburetters and Anchor Supplies.

Liam Fanning, a driver for Bed City, said: "There is nothing left, just ashes.

"There are about six steel stanchions left standing up and that's it, everything else has gone, it's devastated."

The only injury reported was one man - who was reportedly bitten by a snake while moving livestock from the exotic pet business.

A number of other businesses in the Cattle Market, including Arthur Johnson and Sons Auctioneers and the 4am Cafe, have not been directly affected.

They've been redeveloping that areas since way before I lived there 15 years ago. Wonder if it was intentional?

Well what else would you expect, but a fire at Incinerator Road?

Here in Ilfracombe some years ago, Beacon Hotel burned down. It lived up to its name...

Oh the cruel irony. I didn't notice that association. Did make me snigger a bit I will say when you pointed it out.

BBC story updated to add

Quote:
Dawn Lear, manager at Anchor, said: "We are devastated. We got the call and came down but could only stand and watch it burn.

"We have lost the electrical and engineering departments, with First and Second World War items that can't be replaced.

"But clothing, and our museum, seems to have survived. So we will rebuild and restock."

"It was devastating and I felt sick to my stomach. we have been on the site for the best part of 40 years and now it's all pretty much been completely destroyed overnight."

Ms Lear said everything had been lost except the clothing department, which was saved due to being in a separate building.

She added: "We feel lucky the clothing department, which has the museum inside, has been saved but we are so upset about everything else - three quarters of the site is gone.

"We have lost items that will never be able to be replaced. It's surreal to think 40 years of hard work has just been lost and we won't be able to see the full extent of the damage for some time while the crews investigate."

Café owner says CCTV shows Cattle Market fire 'was started by a firework'

https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/...-shows-2184273

Quote:
"The CCTV shows a firework going 'whoosh' in a straight line at the Bed City shutters.
"It drops to the floor, and looks like it's gone out. There are a few sparks.
"Then you can see smoke, and then it's alight under the shutter."

What a terrible thing. Let's hope that fantastic little museum really is safe.

The words 'student housing' have already appeared in the newspaper comments

Default Anchor Supplies Nottingham

Sad news, Anchor Supplies has been destroyed by fire.

https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/...troyed-2184316

I don't know if they still dealt in military radio gear in recent years, on my one and only visit about 25 years ago (a four hour round trip) I was not disappointed, and I bought an R210 which I still have.

Anchor Supplies was quite unique. You could browse the whole site for ages and then pick up anything from a pair of wellies to a used 'scope. It had a lovely relaxed atmosphere, sadly it will never be likely to be the same again. Many of the buildings nearby were made of corrugated iron and wood, some people have said that there is only limited insurance for this type of property. No doubt that half the site will now be developed into eco-friendly living modules. SJM.

Not sure if people will agree with this, but it's topical (even if off-topic)

Anchor Supplies looks like one of those very well loved and successful companies that will rebuild and survive. There will always be available stock coming through from the forces so it looks like it is a case of making do with the available retail space for the time being until the other covered areas within the yard are re-established.
A very similar disaster hit Trago Mills in Newton Abbot in October 2004. They were selling within weeks and the store re-opened within existing space and was selling fire damaged stock.

It is not their only location so they are likely to rebuild however they might relocate to a lower council tax site.
