Re: Old DXTV!
Time for a few more photos from the VHS archive! The VHF reception was from a fixed ex ch5 & 8 aerial in the upper loft attic! No doubt with decent rotatable aerials reception would've been so much better.
1. DR DANMARK BIII- clock caption prior to closedown July 1995 2. Modified DR DANMARK PM5544 July 1995 BIII 3. BRT TV1 in 1991 UHF 4. Unknown circle-less FuBK July 1995 in BIII. I also have a similar card marked "MARKELO" 5. DR1 Programme line up July 1995 BIII Cheers, Brian R Last edited by Focus Diode; 25th Nov 2011 at 2:31 pm. Reason: Added BIII and UHF to pics |

Re: Old DXTV!
You know brian nearly every photo you put iv'e got the video for it.
I have seen the circle-less dutch FUBK paterns and smilde (hoogersmilde) ch's E6-E47 is the mast that colapsed in july and Markelo ch's E7-E54. Of course Lopik used to come in on E4 quite regular and in the video below is Lopik complete with lightning flashes as the high was declining and a thunderstorm moving up from the south. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAK10lonWVk This video was the last reception for me in 1993 as i gave dxing a back seat for some years as interference in band 1 got so bad due to PMR and the same with band 3. Re: Old DXTV!
Fascinating as always Andy and good to hear you have better quality videos of the material I captured.
Which country of origin are "SMILE" and "MARKELO"? I've had a hunt and found some 1995 material I thought lost (though not all). A good catch was an episode of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" featuring the 1969-71 BBC1 COLOUR globe as featured on the episode with Dutch subtitles obliterating the BBC1 COLOUR id! I hunted all over for this with success and will upload in due course. cheers, Brian |

Re: Old DXTV!
I will look forward to see that video funnily enough the lopik video i also thought i had lost that but i found along with long recording of Nederland 3.
That video was recorded on a knackered AKAI VS 10 and the head switching was a bit out. Smilde (Hoogersmilde) and Markelo are dutch transmitters. Andy

More catches:
1). Danmark TV2 Videbaek. Recently opened TV2 UHF network. Pity I couldn't rotate that aerial! 2). Danmark DR1 BIII 1992. 3). Male in-vision announcer BRT TV1 UHFD July 1995 4). Female in-vision announcer BRT TV1 July 1995 5). TV Veronica (NOS-2) In vision announcer July 1995. Cheers, Brian |

Re: Old DXTV!
The last lot from me folks! As mentioned in the opening thread uploads from others are encouraged. Andy has uploaded some superb shots, any others anyone?
1). Nederland 3 clock- a far simpler design than seen in 1992! 2). NOS Caption- a globe? 3). 16:9 PM5544 as txd by NED 3. Whatever happened to "Pal Plus"?! 4). A screen snap of the TV Veronica programme "Veronica Goes Back" NOS2 5). Start of a 1970 edition of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" which started with the BBC1 COLOUR globe caption obliterated by Dutch subtitles! All the above were taken during the fantastic tropo event of July 1995 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne with the fixed XC343 Fuba aerial. Cheers, Brian Last edited by Focus Diode; 28th Nov 2011 at 11:39 pm. Re: Old DXTV!
Back in the early 1970's we regularly received low-band Australian TV in New Zealand during the late afternoon/early evening. Receiver location was on the east coast of the North Island and about 40 miles due north of Auckland as the crow flies (Snells Beach on the Mahurangi Peninsular for any Kiwi members). Australia was to the West so the antenna was pointed inland.
The set was a Philips S8, arguably the best performer of all NZ TVs of that era in all respects. The antenna was a 5 element low-band yagi about 25 feet above ground level and signal feed was 300 ohm ribbon. Picture and sound quality varied, but at its best the signal strength was strong enough to get well above snow-level and sound quality was generally very good. Aerial orientation was SSW but the signal source was due East so if I'd swung the aerial around we'd probably have received more stations and at better strength. It was a long time ago but I think the signals were mainly from Sydney (1340 miles), but some may have been from Melbourne (1630 miles). That is about the same distance as London to Dubrovnik. Australia was pretty much our only option for DX TV. Cheers Billy |

Re: Old DXTV!
Thanks for the info Billy it's interesting hearing from dxers from other countries.
Of course it must be rather strange just being able to receive one country well it is to me and those distances are very impressive. Andy

Re: Old DXTV!
Certainly enjoyed looking at that. Thanks for letting us know about it Trevor.
There was mention of 'SZUNET' which I'm sure is from MTV Hungary. Cheers, Brian Last edited by Focus Diode; 1st Dec 2011 at 8:16 pm. |

Re: Old DXTV!
Hi folks. I have some old copies of Practical Television, starting from the days before DXTV was 'officially' a hobby.
Has anyone heard of Charles Rafarel? He was the first P.T. DXTV columnist. He did much to draw TV DXers together and to encourage growth in the hobby. I only discovered it in the 1980s, so I only knew of Roger Bunney, Ron Ham, Simon Hamer etc. Attached is an early reader's report of freak reception in Northumberland. Also the DX-TV column from March 1965, where Charles addresses to the Band 3 Continental channels, plus reader reports. |

Re: Old DXTV!
Charles Rafarel edited the first DXTV column in PTV and did a considerable amount to get the hobby and interest established. Sadly he died in 1971, his last column was in May 1971 I think.
Roger Bunney, already an established expert in the field and friend of Charles was invited to take over the feature from the following month onwards. I was in touch with Simon Hamer during the '80s, having been put in contact via Roger Bunney, upto his tragic death in 1994 aged only 39. He would've loved this site. Cheers, Brian |
