Beginner with bad rust case.
Just finished my first restoration and want to do more..
I have a Decca TP22 on the bench now. It is tested and is working,a crackley volume pot-nothing major. The whole radio was very dirty but is starting to clean up nicley. However,it looks like battery acid has leaked onto the chassis. I think the chassis will need stripped down to cure this. I have two questions: 1: Is it worth doing to this "wee silly radio" as my wife called it? 2: What is most suitable agent( I have searched a lot on this forum and found many suggestions,including Coca Cola |

Re: Beginner with bad rust case.
Hi, in answer to your questions;
1. Only you can answer this. If it's working, and just needs a tidy up then I would. I think it's a nice little set, the above chassis components look spotless. 2. You should be able to tidy this up without stripping the chassis, all the better if you can as this will save a lot of work and will save spoiling the originality. Try removing the transistors from the gromets by pushing them in from the out side do not pull on the lead out wires Cut the gromets if necessary, they are easily replaced. I'm not sure if it would be acid or alkali from a battery, best sticking to soapy water and a pan scourer to get rid of the worst, then fine emery and WD40. Mask and spray up with silver spray paint, should be quite an easy restoration (famous last words!) All the best, Rob.

Sounds like good sensible practical advice! I will have a go at that methinks. Do you mean mask ALL chassis components and silver spray the WHOLE chassis or just the bit which is treated? |

Re: Beginner with bad rust case.
Up to you man, personally I'd just spray the treated portion as it's hidden inside the cabinet. It all depends how fussy you are and how much time / effort you want to spend.
Rob.
