Default Two Panasonic SG-555L’s

Two Panasonic SG-555L’s that I have picked up from car boot sales. I had to take all the switches apart and clean every contact with fine emery paper , including the Record/Replay and Record speed switch.
Also did the same with Volume and Tone control. With an overall service they work well and I am very pleased with the results.

Fun machines, I haven't seen one of those for many years.

Well done on restoring them, you did well to get those switches apart without damage.

I used to use fine emery paper for things like that until someone here expressed their horror! I now tend to use a piece of thin, stiff card saturated with Brasso, then rinse off the residue with IPA.

Nick.

Being Panasonic they should work well, certainly better than the similiar but cheaper offerings that we had to suffer from other makes.

Nice work there. I have a soft spot for interesting portables.

As Nick says, well done on the switches, in particular. Please pass on any tips!

Yes, typical Japanese, mid-80s(?) solid build quality, and sensible Panasonic design, though nothing too special on paper (something like 2 x 3W output, ceramic cartridge, no Dolby NR).

Good to see these players being looked after - never owned one but always fascinated by vinyl-on-the-move type portables.

You might be lucky with these switches, the contacts in the picture don't look plated, but it's hard to tell. In general emery paper is very harmful to small signal switches with plated contacts, it removes the dirt and the plating, they will work for a while and then never work well again.

Unless I can be sure that they were either never plated, or the plating has already worn through, I would never use an abrasive on signal contacts. Card or paper soaked in alcohol (although that can sometimes deposit fibres) or its proprietary equivalent is my favourite. Glass fibre brush and ultrasonic cleaner are also useful things to have handy for switch maintenance.
