Default Philips Babette

I took pity on this filthy Philips, as I had never seen one before and it is an early VHF set. I have discovered that it is for the German market and that it dates from 1961.

It had suffered battery leakage, but it had not done any damage to the set. After a good clean up of the battery compartment, I fitted the six batteries it needed, and away it went!

Electrically, the only work required was a drop of Servisol in the pushbutton assembly.

Unfortunately the cabinet was not so easy, I had to strip out the chassis and speaker and then stripped the cabinet down, removing the speaker grill, tuning scale surround, handle and badge.

I set about the vinyl covered plywood case with flash spray bleach spray cleaner, as the case was one of the worst nicotine stained sets I have ever had to deal with .

After a great deal of scrubbing, it didn't look to bad, and it certainly would
not get any cleaner! I then turned my attention to the brass fittings, these were so bad (looked like bronze!). I used an abrasive block to restore the brass, followed by a good polish with Solvol metal polish. I then cleaned the tuning scale and it's plastic window and re-assembled the set.

Although nowhere near mint, it has come up quite well, and works really well. Luckily it retains it's original rod aerial.

I am quite pleased with this set, and well worth the £1 I paid for it .

Nice set there, and still working under all that muck. Very mucky sets do come up well, perhaps the dirt protects the set?

I notice it has a telescopic antenna. Is a VHF set or is that for SW?

Cheers,

Steve P.

Ohh, that's cute!
And nicely cleaned! Good one Mark, another one for posterity!
Lets hope it doesn't use the dreaded AF11x series transistors.

It is a vhf set, mw/lw but no shortwave, it has come up pretty well, but still has a few stained areas on the cabinet that wont shift

Unfortunately it does, but all seem fine, as the set is working well.
It seems that this is quite a rare set, as i have only found one reference to it,
on a german site, so even rarer to find one over here.
